When Vision Meets Its Moment
Every entrepreneurial journey is a bet on vision and a bet on timing. You see a possibility before others do. You work to bring it into being, often years ahead of the market. And then you wait - sometimes impatiently, sometimes with grim persistence - for the world to catch up. With Skreens, Marc Todd's vision started in a surprisingly tangible way: with a box.
Name the Problem
At Incandescent, we're discovering better ways to create, build and run organizations to do the world's most important work. We advise companies, build ventures, and conduct research - and we work with foundations and non-profits to change systems and achieve lasting impact. Follow publication The more open your eyes are, the more often you meet someone who sees the world in a way you haven’t seen it yet — and who is squarely, powerfully, passionately right about what counts.
Are You Committed to Meaning What You Say?
One of the things long friendships teach us is that one needn’t say everything at once. Old friends are beautiful to us partly because we can linger on each facet of them, seeing each part in light of the whole and knowing that the rest will be there to return to.
The Shape of a Year
In the higher levels of the game of work, we are presented with a question: How can we grow into powers we don’t yet have… … so that we can accomplish goals currently far beyond our reach… … and experience, in the course of this reaching and becoming, joy in our unfolding days and a sense of wholeness in our accumulating years? Feedback in the Moment
Experience decays. While some experiences stay with us vividly for years, most fade in hours. Rapid feedback matters because it translates experience into learning while the experience is still alive for us. He founded Aravind, an organization based in Madurai, in the south of India, that has delivered nearly 4 million eye surgeries, more than half as many eye surgeries as the entire UK National Health System, at levels of quality comparable to the world’s top academic medical centers, for less than 1% of the cost of NHS.
On Human Enterprise
In my post “The Zen of Work: Making Each Moment Count,” I looked at the way that effectiveness within episodes of solo work drives productivity. By framing an episode, visualizing the path forward, working through the task both by getting immersed and taking time to “step above” the level of the work, and thoughtfully completing the episode, a rhythm forms that keeps the work connected to the larger picture while still encouraging deep focus on the task at hand.
Beyond the Holacracy Hype
Idea in Brief The Hype Holacracy and other forms of self-organization have been getting a lot of press. Proponents hail them as “flat” environments that foster flexibility, engagement, productivity, and efficiency. Critics say they’re naive, unrealistic experiments. The Reality Neither view is quite right. Although the new forms can help organizations become more adaptable and nimble, most companies shouldn’t adopt their principles wholesale. The Potential A piecemeal approach usually makes sense.
