Most of us have experienced blushing—the involuntary reddening of the face that accompanies self-conscious emotions, such as embarrassment, shyness, shame and pride [1–3]. Although Darwin considered it universal and ‘the most human of all expressions’ [4], we still know relatively little about the mechanisms that cause blushing. Theories of blushing disagree on how it comes about. One framework proposes that blushing originates from higher-level cognitive processing.
