Nipun Prabhakar
Nipun Prabhakar’s Biography
Nipun is an independent photographer, journalist and architect based in Delhi and Bhopal. A member of Diversify. Photo community, he works with various South Asian indigenous communities, documenting stories at the intersection of ideas, artefacts, folklore, and the built environment.
In his photos, he explores the poetics and politics of the quotidian. His background as an architect has deeply impacted his sense of space in situations that call for a contextual response to culture and geography. This duality provides him with an opportunity to both observe and participate in different cultures.
His photographs have appeared in print and the digital space of The New York Times, The Washington Post, Restofworld, REDUX Pictures, People's Archive of Rural India, The Hindu, Scroll, Aga Khan Awards for Architecture, Google arts and culture etc. He has forged partnerships with leading academic institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University, Institute of Development Studies (UK), and the University of Michigan, collaborating on diverse research and documentation endeavours.
He is a recipient of the Berkeley Essay Prize 2014 and was the Cornell South Asian Fellow 2019-20 for his documentary work on Nepal.
In 2023, Nipun received a prestigious invitation to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London to present his work and participate in a round table at their first Architecture Photography Festival.
Nipun is also the founder of Dhammada Collective, an architecture and design collective working towards community architecture, participatory design, natural building, and circular design and construction.
