Lately, my four teenagers have been talking quite a bit about hantavirus. I figured if they were worried about the cluster of infections aboard a cruise ship in the Southern Hemisphere, you might be too. In early May 2026, the cruise ship MV Hondius embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina with plans to cross the Drake Passage and visit the Antarctic Peninsula. The passengers onboard were from Spain, France, the UK, United States and the Netherlands.

Niran Al-Agba Columnist May 9, 2026, 6:01 a.m. PT Whooping cough is known as the "100-day cough" because symptoms can be prolonged. Initially, the cold-like symptoms can last 1 to 2 weeks, but the paroxysmal coughing stage can last up to 10 weeks or more. Last week, the Kitsap Public Health District (KPHD) notified the public that whooping cough is spreading in Kitsap County after identifying groups of cases at two North Kitsap schools.
