Top 5 Albums of 2021: Noah Bosch
Noah Bosch January 4, 2022 As we wrap up the year, we’re sharing some of our staff members’ favorite albums of the year. Here’s Noah Bosch’s list. 5. Wednesday – Twin Plagues Wednesday proves that grunge never really left with their 2021 album “Twin Plagues” which features enough grime and grit to make anyone wanna tear their jeans up and skip class. The dirty instrumentals and hard distortion are complimented wonderfully by the leader singers light and pained tonality.
Mutineer Music EP. 5 2020’s Hyperpop
Noah Bosch, Marketing Director May 21, 2021 If anti-pop is the cynical mirror reflecting the dark core hidden inside chart-topping pop songs, hyperpop is the bird-flipping, in-your-face parody of its parent genre. Described by The Atlantic as “Noisy, ugly, and addictive,” hyperpop is seen as the off-the-rails, bastard child of pop and more importantly, the internet generation.
Mutineer Music | Episode 5: 2010s Anti-Pop
Noah Bosch, Marketing Director April 23, 2021 To understand that which is counter culture or anti mainstream, one must understand what the status quo in question is. If there’s nothing to rebel against, then a rebellion will cease to be anything more than the norm. In this way, anti-pop exists only because of the existence of pop itself in all its sugary cookie cutter glory. Anti-pop exists outside the realm of definition.
Matriarchs of Music | Doja Cat
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer April 2, 2021 To the average listener in 2018, “MOOOO!” was, if nothing else, comically zany. Nothing about the cow-themed getup, farm animal-inspired lyrics, or general ridiculousness of the now iconic music video screamed up-and-coming pop star. Perhaps because of this outlandish art created by Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, we have the TikTok superstar version of Doja Cat today.
Dreamy Wanderings | “Hi.” by Lauren Sanderson
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer March 26, 2021 Lesbian pop artist and self-proclaimed delinquent Lauren Sanderson is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of the genre towards new and exciting avenues. Having listed artists such as Mac Miller, Tyler the Creator and Logic as major sources of inspiration for her, it’s easy to see the immense influence that hip hop has had on Lauren’s overall pop style.
Mutineer Music | Episode 4: 2000s Emo
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer March 12, 2021 While fans of the genre and the culture curated from it may say that “it’s not just a phase,” the explosion of emo into mainstream music was as brief as it was extraordinary. This is not to say that the genre and culture of emo have not remained deeply rooted within popular culture, rather that it has since become less prominent since its peak in the early 2000s.
Bringing Disco Back in Style | “Fall” by SG Lewis
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer March 9, 2021 While it may be bittersweet to say in light of the French duo’s recent retirement announcement, Daft Punk had a monumental effect on the music industry as a whole, revolutionizing the world of disco, electronic, pop and many more genres. SG Lewis’s debut album times deeply reflects the now retired DJ’s mastery of rhythm, harmony, and that X-factor needed to make people get on their feet and dance.
A Head-Bopping Outcry | “Somethin’ Ain’t Right” by Masego ft. JID & Rapsody
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer February 19, 2021 Judas and the Black Messiah is a harrowing tale of suffering and oppression, so ripe with tension and despair it can be difficult to stomach—which is all the more reason for it to be respected. The constant terrorizing of the African American community on behalf of the police and F.B.I. is placed on full display, no coats of sugar applied.
Mutineer Music | Episode 3: 90s Hip-Hop
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer February 5, 2021 Few genres of music stay mainstream for longer than a decade. Even fewer dominate not only the charts, but the culture of the general populous for longer than that. Less than a handful can be said to have stayed in the spotlight for nearly half a century. And even less than that can say they spawned a political revolution that radically changed the views of a country with nothing more than rhythm and rhymes.
Mutineer Music | Episode 2: 80s Grunge
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer January 15, 2021 With the death of disco, the people of the 1980s believed that the era of cheesy, oversaturated music was over. Unfortunately for the would-be hopefuls, the likes of dance-pop and hair metal pecked their way out of incubation. The world was quickly ravaged by subpar melodies and industry plugs destined for stardom.
Good Things Come to Those Who Wait | “Good Days” by SZA
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer January 8, 2021 Top Dawg Entertainment is a label known for its keen eye for legendary talent, playing host to hip-hop giants such as Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy-Q. R&B superstar SZA plays a pivotal role in the label’s success, providing it with an angelic voice capable of creating two studio albums filled with smash hits. Despite this success, getting more content from the fabled R&B star has seemed to be a fruitless effort.
Impact Mixtape | “Wild West Road Trip” by Noah Bosch
“Wild West Road Trip” is a playlist I created to try and capture the feelings I had road tripping through the open expanses of Arizona and Nevada in the summer of 2019. I also took heavy inspiration from the various tracks used for montages in the AMC shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, as I feel those shows perfectly encapsulate the atmosphere of the southwestern states and their rolling, dusty plains.
Mutineer Music | Episode 1: 70s Punk
A mini-series on rebellious genres through the decades Noah Bosch December 11, 2020 The overwhelming urge to stick it to the man or slam doors in the face of disgruntled authority is a mutual feeling shared by countless people over the years. The satisfaction of holding that middle finger high in the face of an oppressive force is one not easily replicated. If there is a cause, there is a rebel.
Sugar-Crazed Cage Rage | “Let It Out” by Rico Nasty
Noah Bosch December 7, 2020 As a raspy menace with an affliction for chaos, Rico Nasty has more than established herself as an unpredictable force of nature within the realm of hip-hop. With the ability to waltz the line between sanity and insanity like the pockets in her flows, Rico Nasty is an artist that may repulse as much as she impresses. Her debut album Nightmare Vacation, released this past Friday.
Psychedelic Weaponry | “Crystal Sword” By Aesop Rock
Noah Bosch November 23, 2020 The title “king of the underground” in reference to hip hop has been a label relentlessly sought after since its inception, given only to the most notably gifted and creative music-makers trying their best to stay out of the spotlight. This title jumps from MC to MC at the drop of a hat, with a few namesakes keeping the title for finite eras, such as MF DOOM, Slug, Eyedea, Jedi Mind Tricks and many more.
Jamming in a New Medium | Virtual Concerts in the Pandemic
Noah Bosch November 16, 2020 Covid-19 has all but ensured that large gatherings of people in close proximity will remain a dangerous past time for the foreseeable future. It’s taken a heavy toll on a plethora of activities that people enjoy, one of which being concerts. With thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people packed together and dancing, an outbreak of Covid-19 is nearly impossible to avoid.
Finding Freedom in Isolation | “Triple Double” by Jean Dawson
Noah Bosch November 2, 2020 Freedom is a curious concept, especially during these times of restriction and quarantining. It can be hard these days to feel that sense of wanderlust and the fearful excitement of a world completely open to one’s own undertaking. Jean Dawson’s new album, Pixel Bath, encapsulates this nostalgic yearning for a freedom long forgotten with intoxicating charisma and irresistible energy that is sure to put a smile on even the most stubborn face.
A Soaring Blend of Old and New │ “The Pink Phantom” by Gorillaz
Noah Bosch October 26, 2020 If we’re being honest with ourselves, the 2010s have been a hard decade for Gorillaz fans around the world. The universal praises sung for the release of Gorillaz fourth studio album Plastic Beach (released in 2010) fell flat with the release of their at best controversial and at worst unanimously hated Humanz album in 2017.
A Somber Separation | “Oh How We Drift Away” - Tim Heidecker and Weyes Blood
Noah Bosch October 16, 2020 In these times of remaining socially distanced and often isolated from those we love, it’s hard not to feel akin to the crestfallen yearnings that guide the dreary and forlorn folk melodies of Weyes Blood and Tim Heidecker’s new joint song, “Oh How We Drift Away.” The final track on Tim Heidecker’s newest album Fear of Death, on which Weyes Blood (credited on this project as Natalie Mering) collaborates frequently on, and co-wrote both “Oh How We Drift Away” as...
April’s First | “Time” - Childish Gambino
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer April 1, 2020 Donald Glover is a man of many talents, and a serious contender for one of the most fascinating celebrities out there. Whether he’s raising roofs as his music artist persona “Childish Gambino,” raising a rebellion as an actor in his role as Star Wars’ Lando Calrision or raising spirits as himself during his comedy tours, the spotlight never seems to stop shining on this jack of all trades.
Glitz and Glamor | “Escape from LA” - The Weeknd
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer March 30, 2020 Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few weeks – or practicing some extreme social distancing – you’ve probably noticed a buzz around After Hours, The Weeknd’s new album. The buzz was aided in part by the single “Blinding Lights,” a ‘80s synthpop mega hit, as well as a Mercedes-Benz commercial of equal flash. The Weeknd had set the bar quite high for himself.
Unlocked & Untamed | “‘Cosmic’ .m4a” - Denzel Curry, Kenny Beats
If you’ve been keeping track of Denzel Curry’s releases, you would know that he has more than superseded the talent and animosity he portrayed on “Ultimate,” his debut hit single. Denzel has distanced himself from “Ultimate” through releases such as his third full-length project TA13OO, which was an emotional deep dive into the complex and murky waters of Denzel’s psyche.
Matriarchs of Music | 2019’s Women of Hip-Hop
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer February 24, 2020 Send email to this address Enter Your Name Add a comment here Verification: What's 8 + 9? In September of 1988, MC Lyte released her first studio album Lyte as a Rock. The album marked the first time a female artist threw their hat into the realm of hip-hop in a major way.
A Robotic Ballad | “Modus Vivendi” - 070 Shake
Noah Bosch, Writer/Volunteer January 27, 2020 Send email to this address Enter Your Name Add a comment here Verification Modus Vivendi, 070 Shake’s debut LP, was released on Jan. 17 of this year by Kanye West’s G.O.O.D music record label. The artwork for the album displays a part-robot, part-humanoid figure bound by gleaming cords and wires to an unseen entity. Gazing despondently off into the distance, the figure’s crestfallen demeanor incites intrigue.
