Root for teams you connect with
Rewon Shimray | Cartoonist If you’re a fan of any sport, one question you will hear often is, “What team do you root for?” About 99% of sports fans have a team they root for unless you’re one of the crazy people that are emotionless when you engage in a sporting event.

Baylor history professor uses military background to inspire students
By Noah Torr | Executive Producer Dr. George Gawrych, or Dr. G. as many Baylor students call him, is a history professor that specializes in military history and modern Middle East. As a child, Gawrych said he was obsessed with math but throughout school he fell into history and his experience has turned out better than he could’ve ever imagined. “Sometimes life gives you things you don’t appreciate and then all of sudden things open up,” Gawrych said.
Professors affirm self-authored textbooks are beneficial to students
By Noah Torr | Executive Producer Buying textbooks can often be a college students nightmare. The hunt for the cheapest version of any book can lead to many headaches and late nights, and these books can also add up to be over hundreds of dollars. Students may have noticed that professors that write their own textbooks. Dr. Carey Newman, editorial director of the Baylor University Press, said self-authored textbooks provide another layer of depth to the classroom learning experience.
Defense learning quickly under new coaching staff
Baylor senior safety Verkedric Vaughns and the Baylor defense celebrate after stopping the Abilene Christian offense on Sept. 1 at McLane Stadium. Liesje Powers | Multimedia Editor By Noah Torr | Broadcast Reporter For Baylor football, defense has become a serious focal point for head coach Matt Rhule. At Rhule’s previous coaching stop, Temple University, defense was an issue in the first season as well.
Improved offense helps Bears reach bowl game
Baylor sophomore quarterback Charlie Brewer rushes the ball against TCU on Nov. 17 at McLane Stadium. Brewer and the Bears’ offense improved drastically over the course of a year to help Baylor go from one win to six. The Bears face Vanderbilt at 8 p.m. Dec. 27 at the Texas Bowl in Houston. Jason Pedreros | Multimedia Journalist By Noah Torr | Broadcast Reporter The offensive side of the football is becoming extremely important, especially in the Big 12 Conference. Look at Oklahoma.

Lah and Bendeck ready for ITA Championships
After withdrawing from the ITA Regional tournament last weekend, men’s tennis duo sophomore Sven Lah and senior Jimmy Bendeck are ready for the ITA Fall Championships next Wednesday. Lah and Bendeck went 3-0 at the ITA Regionals before retiring before the semi-finals because of the tightness in Lah’s back. Bendeck said it was the right move for them to pull out before playing since they had already clinched their spot in the Championships.
Keep journalists safe
It’s no shock the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, isn’t a fan of journalists. He treats press conferences like he is doing journalists a favor and has not been shy about dismissing credible news sources, such as the New York Times, Washington Post and even ABC. There are many issues I have with that, and you should, too, but journalists have been dealing with his comments for over two years.
Lady Bears cruise by Langston in first exhibition game
After a busy offseason, the Baylor women’s basketball team hit the court on Friday night in its first exhibition game against the Langston Lions and won 110-45. Even though the Lady Bears scored more than 100 points, there are still questions about Baylor’s season, especially in regards to who will start at point guard in Alexis Morris’ absence.
Dream Team proves itself as more than just a practice squad
For many student athletes in high school, moving on to college can end your athletic career. Those Friday night lights quickly turn into late night study sessions and you become less acquainted with a sport or activity that used to be your passion. It can be hard transition, but for one group of athletes at Baylor, they didn’t have to give up their passion completely. The Dream Team, on paper, is a group of 25 men at Baylor that function as a practice squad for the Lady Bears basketball team.
Basketball is back: Lariat sports experts share predictions and opinions about the upcoming NBA season
With the NBA season starting this week, four Lariat sports experts offer up their picks, predictions and opinions on the upcoming season. The Celtics can challenge the Warriors’ throne The Golden State Warriors have won three of the last four NBA Championships and are arguably the greatest team in NBA history. This offseason, Golden State added four-time All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. Despite all this, the Boston Celtics have a legitimate shot at taking them down.
Procrastination offers some benefits
I’m going to tell you something that you’ve been told is wrong your whole life. It’s something that is frowned upon and something that college forces you to break. But I’m here to tell you what everyone else won’t: the positives about being a procrastinator. That’s right. There are positives to being a procrastinator, and sometimes it’s actually beneficial for you to not always be on top of everything. For example, as I’m typing this, I am past my deadline that my editor set for me. Am I worried?
Wide receivers shine in first two games
VIDEO By Noah Torr | Broadcast Reporter While the Bears went 1-11 in their 2017 football campaign, the team’s wide receivers still managed to make their mark on the field last season. Junior wide receiver Denzel Mims became the go-to for the 2017 Big 12 offensive freshman of the year Charlie Brewer, when Brewer and Mims connected for 152 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Texas Tech on Nov. 11.
Lady Bears volleyball stomps Wisconsin Badgers 3-1
The No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers rolled into town on Friday with high hopes against Baylor since the Lady Bears had just come off a rough California road trip, losing to UCLA and San Diego State. The Lady Bears needed a win to stay competitive in the rankings, but Wisconsin wasn’t about to roll over. Baylor finished with a 3-1 win over the Badgers.
New cross country coach steps up for new season
“If you walk in here and all my stuff is all over everywhere, you may want to not give me too much stuff to do, because it’s a reflection of what’s going on in my head. If I have 50 things on my desk, that’s probably what my head looks like.” Jon Capron is the new associate head cross country coach here at Baylor. While he is not new to the school –– he’s been here for 14 years as an assistant coach –– this is his first season as the associate head coach.
Kyle Kuzma, Lakers steal one from Celtics without Lonzo Ball, 108-107
My oh my, what a game this was between classic NBA rivals! Your Los Angeles Lakers, sans Lonzo Ball, beat the Boston Celtics, 108-107 in a hair-pulling affair. Lonzo was out tonight with a sore left knee and remains without a timetable to return. So, it was the Jordan Clarkson show again, with a critical cameo from rookie Kylz Kuzma, and neither disappointed. Clarkson racked up 22 points, four rebounds, and five assists in this thriller.
Will Barton Carried Off Court After Suffering Ankle Injury in Practice
Denver Nuggets swingman Will Barton suffered an injury during practice Monday and needed to be carried off the court, BSNDenver.com's T.J. McBride reported. According to McBride, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone believes Barton injured his ankle. The injury comes two days before Denver opens the 2017-18 regular season on the road against the Utah Jazz. Barton appeared in all 82 games during his breakout 2015-16 campaign, but he was hampered by persistent ankle issues last year.
Gregg Popovich: Donald Trump a 'Soulless Coward' for Comment on Fallen Soldiers
Dave Zirin of The Nation reported the news, noting Popovich's comments were in regard to Donald Trump claiming former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush failed to call the families of soldiers who had died. According to Kevin Liptak of CNN, Trump said Monday he wrote letters to and planned on calling the families of four American soldiers who died in Niger in early October.
NBA Jersey Sponsors That Actually Make Sense
The Chicago Bulls and Vine are alike in many ways, but here is the main reason Vine would be perfect for the Bulls: They're both tolerable for roughly six seconds. When Vine was still around, it was fun to watch videos once and then scroll down your feed and go about your day. Sometimes the Vine would be exceptional and you would have to watch it twice to make sure you received the full effect. But there's always that one person who enjoys watching the same Vine on repeat until it becomes annoying.
Report: LaMarcus Aldridge, Spurs Agree to 3-Year, $72 Million Contract Extension
The San Antonio Spurs agreed to a contract extension with LaMarcus Aldridge, ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday. According to The Vertical's Shams Charania, the deal is worth $72.3 million over three years. Under the terms of his existing contract, Aldridge has a $22.3 million player option for the 2018-19 season.

The team has announced that his status will be updated in a few weeks but he could miss up to 6 week as reported by Ian Rapoport. #Browns No. 1 pick Myles Garrett was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, knocking him out several weeks. AFC South 2017 Predictions | Def Pen
AFC South 2017 Predictions (Andy Lyons/Getty Images) Everyone uses different indicators when predicting divisional winners. There are four keys, in no particular order, that I consider when carefully calculating my AFC South 2017 predictions: These are not the “end all, be all” qualifications. These are the key indicators that help decide who wins and who loses. Quarterback play is extremely important in the NFL, especially when trying to make a playoff run.
Kemba Walker says his Knee "feels great" - Def Pen
Kemba Walker. (Photo: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports) The Charlotte Hornets’ Kemba Walker is one of the most intriguing players in the NBA. Walker is a talented point guard, but in a league where there are multiple All-Stars at the position, he tends to get overlooked. Not helping his case for recognition is the fact that the Hornets haven’t been very good. The team did make the playoffs as a sixth seed in 2016; where they were beaten by Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat in the first round.
Harrison Barnes on Missing Playoffs: "I Felt Like I Retired" | Def Pen
Harrison Barnes isn’t accustomed to watching the playoffs – or the NBA Finals, for that matter – on TV. Barnes was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2012. In his rookie year, the Warriors won 47 games. The next year, 51. The year after that, 67. Then, of course, the famous 73 wins. Barnes isn’t used to losing, and lose he did last season, more often than not. In his first year with the Dallas Mavericks, Barnes’ team went 33-49. Obviously, they fell far short of the playoffs.
REPORT: Isaiah Thomas Could Be Out Until All-Star Break | Def Pen
Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas (that feels so weird to type) seems determined that his hip injury isn’t serious. The Celtics and Cavs clearly disagree, as does Jason Lloyd of The Athletic: No one is willing to put a timeline on when Thomas might return to the court. The fact he isn’t even running yet certainly is not a good sign.
Justise Winslow Is Ready for the Start of the NBA Season | Def Pen
Calling all Miami Heat fans. Come one, come all because I have news that should shatter your earth. Justise Winslow spoke with Anthony Chiang of the Palm Beach Post about his extended offseason and his shoulder rehabilitation. In Winslow’s interview, he revealed the process he went through to get back to full health. “My shoulder is feeling great. I’m 100 percent now,” said Winslow, who is promoting the September youth clinic he will host on behalf of his family’s foundation.
Jets Trade Sheldon Richardson To Seahawks For Jermaine Kearse and Draft Considerations | Def Pen
The Seattle Seahawks just plucked a big fish to plug along the defensive line. Jets star three technique Sheldon Richardson has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Jermaine Kearse and a 2018 2nd round pick. Adam Schefter was the first to report the news: Shefter also added that the draft pick would come in 2018 while the teams will also swap 7th round draft selections. The deal on paper looks good for the Jets considering they were not going to extend him beyond this season.
Rudy Gay is less than pleased with NBA2K's small forward ratings
NBA 2K, the most popular NBA video game, has been teasing details from the game for most of the offseason. Their latest tease involves the top ranked small forwards in the league, which includes Kawhi Leonard. It’s no surprise that LeBron James is the highest ranked small forward; but what is interesting is that both Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard are only one and two points away, respectively. I’m shocked that 2K put them so close together.

After a very impressive 2016-17 season by sharpshooter J.J. Redick, he is ready to cash in. Since the cap has risen, players have been eager to sign one last big contract as they enter or leave their primes. Last year, Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon, and Harrison Barnes all received ludicrous deals because of the increase in the salary cap for NBA teams. While last year would have been a better year to exploit NBA teams for a little extra money, Redick still has his opportunity.
As you know very well by now, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors will be facing off for the third time in the NBA Finals. These powerhouse teams were selected by a majority of NBA fans and analysts alike to represent their respective conferences in the Finals before the season started, and here we are. This year’s playoffs have been fantastic to watch, despite the complaints by many fans.

Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports The Denver Broncos weren’t the same without Peyton Manning in 2016. Granted, Manning was mostly awful in his final year, but he was good enough in the postseason to hoist the Lombardi. Now? The team doesn’t have the same feel to it, ya feel?

The Wizards won 116-89. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports The Boston Celtics have plenty of rivalries. The Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia 76ers, and the New York Knicks. If you wanted to, you could even include the Miami Heat.
The Miami Heat had a very interesting season. They were supposed to be tanking with a roster led by Goran Dragic, Hassan Whiteside and a bunch of young questions marks. It was supposed to be a year focused on player development and the NBA Draft Lottery. Well Erik Spoelstra and company took the challenge and nearly made the playoffs anyway. Even though the Heat went on one of the most impressive runs of the season — 13 straight wins and a 29-11 record after Jan.
Just don’t do it. It’s not worth the humiliation that ensues after they say no. If you want to share your proposal with thousands of people do a Facebook live stream or a Periscope. Or, I have a better idea, just do it in an Italian restaurant like a normal human being. Drop the ring in the champagne, hope they don’t swallow it, and boom, you’re now engaged. See? You didn’t have to share the whole process with 40,000 people waiting with bated breath to hear a response.

Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports Jimmy Butler has been in quite a few trade rumors this season.
After a thrilling 105-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls last night, the Boston Celtics are moving on to the second round. Many fans questioned whether the Celtics were capable of beating the Bulls after going down 0-2 in the series, but they prevailed and won four straight games. Boston is going to play the Washington Wizards next and that will be a difficult matchup for them.

Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports The Celtics are moving on to the second round of the NBA playoffs after defeating the Chicago Bulls in Game 6. The Celtics played hard and deserved the win tonight.
The Boston Celtics currently have a 3-2 lead over the Chicago Bulls and they have the possibility to close out the series tonight. The Celtics have found a solution to the energy problem in their starting lineup through Gerald Green. Ever since Gerald Green made his way into the starting lineup, the Celtics are 3-0 in the series against the Bulls. The Celtics are back to playing their old ways of unstoppable basketball that everyone loved in the regular season.
Apr 18, 2017; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas (4) drives against Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler (21) during the first quarter in game two of the first round of the 2017 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden. Mandatory Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports The Boston Celtics, the home team, got the W on Wednesday night against the Chicago Bulls. Why is it important that we said they’re the home team? Because they’re the first home team to win in this series. Weird, right?
The Celtics won their last matchup to even things up. Isaiah Thomas has been phenomenal this whole series and now the role players are starting to step up and perform at their expected level. The Bulls are playing a totally different style of basketball than the first two games. They look gassed and don’t have any rhyme or reason to their play on the court. That is where Fred Hoiberg comes into play. He has had to put random lineups together while on the fly to try to make this team work.
This series between the Bulls and Celtics has been a serious roller coaster. The one word to describe the series is crazy. There is no explanation for the Bulls playing the way they are. No one could have predicted that Rajon Rondo’s thumb injury would be a game changer, that Gerald Green would start in a game that could have decided the series and that the Celtics role players would have shown up. None of this has gone according to anyone’s predictions.
