I am the author of the book The Philosophy of War and Exile (Palsgrave-Macmillan, 2014).

I have written articles for both popular and academic presses, for both websites and journals, and on topics ranging from the war in Gaza to the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry, from the GamerGate controversy to the parallels between Goethe's Faust and the TV show Hannibal.

We identify a dilemma currently faced by designers and design researchers concerning how best to use the influential nature of design to change people's behavior in a way that benefits society. This dilemma exists because, even though designers can create products that can exercise control over individual freedom, such products are made necessary because people seem resistant to sacrifice their freedom for the good of society.
