Fall migration seemed to start a little early with the hummingbirds coming the middle of July. Six at the feeders one day. The male Calliope with his tiny body, is the smallest nesting bird in North America. His white throat is full of lightening like red streaks and the short tail and beak add to his small appearance. The male Rufous Hummingbird was something else. He has no idea how small his is.
What if HPV does NOT cause cervical cancer?
The title of a paper recently published by McCormack et al in Molecular Cytogenetics says it all, ”Individual karyotypes at the origins of cervical carcinomas.” If the findings in this paper are true, a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) is extremely unlikely to protect against cervical cancer. According to this paper neither genetic predisposition nor HPV infections are necessary for the development of cervical cancer.
For the Birds: All about birding at home
This spring migration and the following weeks have been a little disappointing to me. A few colorful birds migrated through my yard but not like past years. For some reason they seemed very nervous, sometimes pausing for only a few seconds. Then the weeks following, my yard was quiet, except for the nesting regulars, robins, house sparrows and finches, blue jays, flickers and grackles. And a red-tailed hawk for the third year. This was a rather small number.

In response to a letter published by the Greeley Tribune (March 19), I just want to point out the obvious hypocrisy of the Greeley Tribune and the hate speech given by Thomas Baker of Greeley. He called President Donald Trump a demigod, which is mythology. He also called the president a dictator, which is a ruler with total power over a country, typically obtained by force. Neither one has happened. He also wrote, "destroying our way of life." There is not just one way of life in America.
For The Birds: The incredible (and for birds edible) egg
It is spring and birds are nesting, including blue jays. You either love them or hate them. The male and female who are similar in appearance have toned down their loud calls and squawks as they fly quietly to an open cup nest on a tree branch. They are king and queen of the hill at the feeders: All smaller birds make way for them to eat. Blue jays like cracked corn, birdseed, suet, dog food or fruit. No nut is too hard for them to crack. Peanuts in the shell are a favorite.
Erickson: Birds sometimes display troublesome but fascinating behaviors
People are attracted to birds by their color, song and behavior. Many species display strange behaviors we do not understand at first. Some are troublesome. The cute little male house wren is a home wrecker. After selecting his territory he drives off nearby male house wrens. When he finds his mate and they begin their nesting, he destroys the eggs and young of all other species near his family. The red-breasted nuthatch smears thick toxic resin around their nest hole. This kills insects and predators.
The mystery migration of my feathered friends in Greeley
Fall migration has been a mystery this year. In the middle of August hummingbirds started to come. Seven different individuals appeared in a period of two to three weeks. They took one drink of my sugar water and never returned. I checked my recipe and even tasted the sugar in the canister to make sure it was not salt. Everything was OK, but the hummers moved on. Other migrants, such as catbird, orioles, vireos and flycatchers, appeared but did not stay long.
