The flat spell has been broken—thankfully, mercifully. And over a weekend, nonetheless. How rare is it that good surf lines up with the time to actually enjoy it? But today is Saturday, and my time’s my own. It’s small, but it’s clean, and I’ll take anything in the Florida summertime doldrums. Anything to snap my flat-spell-induced case of the grays.

Is there a vengeful, box-ticking middle manager in the sky with a cosmic wire on you? In his Margaret River comp write-up, Longtom drew attention to the outspoken religiosity of some of the surfers on tour. “There really is a God and Brazilian pro surfers are her Chosen People,” he wrote. Professional athletes thanking the divine in their victorious interviews is nothing new. But, does the religiosity on tour reflect the beliefs of average surfers?

Only a surfer knows the feeling… Tropical Storm Isaias rolled past my stretch of the Florida coast Sunday, promising to leave offshore winds and clean surf on Monday. Going to sleep the night before, my brain’s neural pathways fired excitedly. Yes it would be a Monday, and yes I had to finish up and launch an ad campaign for work that was due Tuesday morning, but I was — and I assume other formerly office-trapped surfers will understand my joy — I was working from home.
