I have no memory of a time when I did not play sports. I started tackle football at 5, and since then group games with a ball have been the central force around which I’ve organized my life. But for nearly 40 years, in a life tied up by athletics—co-hosting a show on The Ticket and now The Dumb Zone podcast—there has been one fly in the enjoyment ointment. People laugh when they see me throw or shoot a ball. I am deeply self-conscious about this.

Glasgow, Scotland, has stepped up to host the event in 2026, in a more stripped-back competition, as the number of sports scheduled falls from 19 in 2022 to 10 in 2026.
