Technical Director Insights: Are We Delivering the Value of DSEA Information?
Silviu Livescu, the technical director for SPE’s Digital Science and Engineering Analytics (DSEA) discipline, asked me whether the unprecedented ability to identify underperforming wells and the rebound in wellhead oil and gas prices has led to a boom in well remediation activities (e.g., well cleanouts, reperforation, acidization, refracturing, and sidetracking). To be honest, I don’t know. But I don’t think remediation activities have increased much over the prepandemic levels.
Horses for Courses-Getting Your Message to the Target Audience in the Most-Effective Way
Having struggled to commit some 6,000 words into a Word document for the first time in a long time in time to meet the 2022 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) deadline (with more than “a little help from my friends”, coauthors, and colleagues), I was left wondering Was this a good use of our collective time? Was this the best way to get our message across to its intended audience Of course, the answers are It all depends on the author’s personal and corporate objectives.
Effective Professional Development: Can You Teach What You Learned?
When I was 29, my manager assigned me to write the initial draft of a Tubulars Design Manual for the corporation. Then, as a throw-away line at the end of the kick-off meeting, he added that for the next 6 months, he expected me to present lectures on casing and tubing design at the company’s training center.
Technical Director Insights: Lost and Found in Transition
According to Wikipedia, in the 2003 movie Lost in Translation, the director, Sofia Coppola, explores themes of alienation and disconnection against a backdrop of cultural displacement. In a more general (although not a literal) sense, the expression may also be used to say that something doesn’t sound as good when told in a different way, setting, or language.
SPE Tech Director: Future for Young Facilities Engineers Is Bright in Energy Projects
The future as a production and/or facilities specialist is very bright, especially for those young and mid-career professionals who are highly flexible and can roll with the punches. There are so many opportunities to apply a skill set both in oil and gas operations and other energy-related projects, especially with offshore wind and solar arrays and in geothermal developments for area heating and power. I’d love to be a Young Professional at the start of my career.
Tech Director’s Column: Thoughts About Unmanned Vehicles, Drones, and Robots
In 2016, Accenture and Microsoft published the results of their Oil and Gas Digital Trends Survey forecasting the top areas of focus over the next 3 to 5 years and the fastest areas of growth over that same period. Fig. 1—Investments in digital technologies. Source: World Economic Forum. In 2021, we should be well into the dark blue bars with the rapidly rising investments in robotics and drones showing growth rates exceeding those of artificial intelligence.
Technical Director Insights: Revisiting the Upgraded Road to CCS and CCUS
Recently, I have been trying to wrap my mind around what has been going on with carbon capture utilization and/or sequestration (CCUS) over the past decade. I last looked at the topic while I was in Singapore thinking about how the industry might commercialize all that low- and variable-BTU gas in southeast Asia. The fundamental questions remain much the same: How can the production and facilities community help to drive down costs and build a better road to CCUS application?
Going One Step Beyond
This is my third attempt to write this column and the second topic. I was originally going to do an expanded version of the Production and Facilities monthly email about how my reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic was leading me to make some poor choices with respect to the 3 Rs: I am reading less and watching more talks and panel sessions, even though I know that retention of the material will be much worse than with reading or trying to do something.
