SAVE THE CULTURE: Essential Literature in African American History
Remember when time capsules were a thing? For the uninitiated, groups of people nationwide would accrue the items they felt best represented their era, stow said items in a container of some sort, and hide said container to be one day discovered by future generations as evidence of how we once did things on planet Earth. Think of our SAVE THE CULTURE series as a modernized version of the time capsule.

Ntozake Shange's posthumous unpublished collection of plays, poems, and essays is brought to life by a stellar ensemble of narrators. It begins with Tarana Burke's personal foreword on meeting Shange and leads into Imani Perry's soft-spoken narration. Her even tone encourages reflection by anyone who connects with Shange's work, which has impacted Black women for decades. Each section is introduced. The women's voices come in and out like one long, fluid performance poem.

The Paris Review - Dark Rooms - The Paris Review
By Ntozake Shange September 6, 2023 The following three short essays describe Ntozake Shange’s experience with psychoanalysis. After the success of for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, she struggled with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and drug addiction. Her mental health challenges continued for decades, and she was remarkably open about them and diligent in seeking help through psychoanalysis and traditional talk therapy.
Introduction by Imani Perry
In the spring of 2022, I traveled to New York with my two of my friends, Tarana Burke and Yaba Blay, and Tarana’s adult child, Kaia Burke, to see Ntozake Shange’s classic play: for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, on Broadway, directed by Camille Brown. For our generation and that of our mothers, for colored girls is what could be called an urtext, an anchoring work of art that captures twentieth-century Black women’s lives.

Retirement by Monica Sok - Poems
You and your friend stood on the corner of the liquor store as I left Champa Garden, takeout in hand, on the phone with Ashley who said, That was your tough voice. I never heard your tough voice before. I gave you boys a quick nod, walked E 21st past dark houses. Before I could reach the lights on Park, you criss-crossed your hands around me, like a friend and I’d hoped that you were Seng, the boy I’d kissed on First Friday in October. He paid for my lunch at that restaurant, split the leftovers.

Ntozake Shange on Sun Ra and How She Came to Have Her Name
Yes, I took ballet from kindergarten through high school. Was I passionate? Never. I was always in the back row of cherubs or angels. I was never nimble or precise, and I was Black. Now, how could that be? We all know Black people can “sing and dance,” so what was wrong with me? I won all the contests for best dancer at the Police Athletic League dances. I could follow a man through intricate turns and boleros till we were as one. Something was amiss.

8 of the Best Plays About Social Justice
Theatre is just one the forms of entertainment we have enjoyed together since early times. Like ancient theatre, contemporary theatre can take us to faraway places, bring on laughter or tears, and can ask the big questions. As long as there have been people, there have been social justice issues. These plays look at social justice issues from various viewpoints. Plays are not only entertainment, but also seek to provide perspective and provoke thought.

For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow Is Enuf
The beginning of the Feminist movement began in 1963 when women fought to reform female issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, and equal pay. However, in the nineteenth century, most Black women were enslaved, but free Black women participated in the abolitionist cause. Some like Maria Stewart, Anna Julia Cooper, and Sojourner Truth supported black women's rights and spoke publicly against slavery. Is the fight to be heard over or just starting?
