For months, a sign on the 11-acre parcel near Route 3 in Nutley has advertised a 65-megawatt site with zoning approval. The sign has left many locals believing a data center is already in the works, even though town officials say that’s not the case. The uncertainty brought neighbors to Tuesday night’s Board of Commissioners meeting, where they pressed officials for answers.

New Jersey has approved its first major law aimed at making sure residents don’t bear the cost of powering the state’s growing data center industry. Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation, S731/A796, Tuesday requiring state regulators to create a new electric rate for large load data centers. The goal is to ensure data centers pay for the infrastructure needed to power them instead of passing those costs on to other utility customers.
