Why is Trump propping up Milei while neglecting the needs of Americans?
In January, Donald Trump opened his inaugural address by promising to “put America first” daily and usher in a new golden age for American families. Ten months in, Americans are still waiting for the golden age to arrive and reeling from Trump administration policies that have actively made their lives worse.

Albany Democrats must pass Good Cause Eviction
In the 2022 midterm elections, New York Democrats suffered what can generously be described as a disappointing night, as the Empire State delivered four seats in the House of Representatives to Republicans. In 2024, the control of the House is on the line with the Republican Party holding a thread bare majority. With the stakes so high, we absolutely cannot afford a repeat of 2022 in New York.

Education Against Hate Crimes Act of 2023 (H.R. 6715)
A bill must be passed by both the House and Senate in identical form and then be signed by the President to become law. Bills numbers restart every two years. That means there are other bills with the number H.R. 6715. This is the one from the 118th Congress. We recommend the following MLA-formatted citation when using the information you see here in academic work: GovTrack.us. (2023). H.R. 6715 — 118th Congress: Education Against Hate Crimes Act of 2023.
The Inflation Reduction Act is a clean energy plan that New York needs
Just over one year ago, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) into law. Since then, we have begun to see this historic affordable clean energy plan go into effect and our clean energy future take shape. The IRA is the most significant legislation and, at $369 billion, the largest investment to curb climate change in U.S. history, and that is great news for Brooklyn and Queens.

57 Cents to the Dollar: The Wage Gap for Latinas Is Hurting Our Communities

Opinion | Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Velázquez: Puerto Rico has the right to self-determination Original
It was recently reported that in 2017, while Puerto Rico was suffering through the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, a natural disaster that would ultimately claim nearly 3,000 lives, President Donald Trump had inquired about “selling” the Island. While this heartless suggestion was discarded by his advisers, the incident speaks to how disposable Washington has long viewed Puerto Rico to be.
Stopping a tsunami of evictions: How to prevent people from getting kicked out of their homes when the coronavirus crisis ends
Amid the sweeping devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, advocates are ringing the alarm over what many are warning will likely be a tidal wave of evictions across New York City. What’s Really Been Missing from the Democratic Presidential Debate Stage
(photo: NYCHA) Another Democratic presidential primary debate is now behind us, and once again not a single question has been asked about how our next President will address one of the federal government’s biggest failures of the last half-century – the neglect and divestment in our nation’s public housing. Candidates across the board are developing new and exciting progressive policies that have energized the Democratic electorate (including many around affordable housing).

Remembering Rafael Hernández Colón
On Thursday morning, Puerto Rico lost a hero and a giant in our Island’s modern political history. Rafael Hernández Colón was a stateman, a brilliant political mind and a tireless fighter for economic and social justice. I had the privilege of serving under Rafael when he appointed me Secretary of Puerto Rico’s Department of Federal Affairs in the United States, where we launched one of the most comprehensive voter registration campaigns in the United States.

In Rebuke of Trump on Maria Tragedy, House Set to Approve Velázquez Death Toll Bill
The U.S. House of Representatives is on track to approve legislation that would establish federal guidelines for death tolls following disasters. The “Count Act”, introduced in the House by Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), has been incorporated into the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill, H.R. 302, which is widely expected to pass the House Wednesday with bipartisan support and receive Senate approval shortly thereafter.
Maria Anniversary: Trump Administration Letdown Proved Fatal; Lessons for Florence?
As our fellow Americans in the Carolinas face the devastation of Hurricane Florence, we are reminded that this week marks one year since Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, and when Irma and Maria devastated the Virgin Islands. In Puerto Rico, Maria came ashore in my hometown, Yabucoa, as a Category 4 storm. Sustained winds, exceeding 150 miles per hour, ravaged bridges, roads and destroyed more than 87,000 homes – with another 385,000 being seriously damaged.
One year later, an open wound: How the federal government failed Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria
At that point, Congress had only approved $6.2 million for Maria victims. It took another week to get 70 helicopters flying above Puerto Rico, and even then, the island’s residents received thousands of fewer tarps and millions less liters of water and meals compared to their Texan counterparts. The USNS Comfort, a Naval ship often sent to disaster zones, was deployed only after pressure and even then, it sat empty for days.
Positive changes coming for small business lending program
According to the latest survey from MetLife and the U.S Chamber of Commerce, it’s a great time to be a small business owner. Due to a variety of economic factors, small business optimism rose to its second highest level in history in May. In turn, this atmosphere fuels more jobs, higher wages, and a stronger economy. While this is great news, that’s not to say that small business owners have no obstacles standing in their way.
Hiram Monserrate Has No Place in Elected Office
Rep. Velázquez, the author, rallying for Moya for Council (photo: @ydanis) Elections send messages. You don't have to look any farther than the victory of Donald Trump to see that electing a racist, misogynistic demagogue helps to normalize abhorrent behaviors in the eyes of some Americans. That may be why, as the Southern Poverty Law Center reports, our country saw 1,094 bias incidents in the first 34 days after the November election.
Ladies, start your economic engines
In certain parts of the country, entrepreneurship is booming. A well-educated creative class clusters in tight networks that easily attract bank loans, birth new businesses and create exciting jobs. But this opportunity paradise is far too concentrated, and even within these areas a whole segment of the population seems forgotten, namely women and women of color.
