Tunnelen skal blant annet være en kompensasjon for å ivareta jordvern på 1,5 km av totalt 5,6 km. For Solsida byggefelt, grunneiere og drivere av gårdsbruk opp til Harstad, oppleves nok dette som en seier. Hva med utvikling av Batnfjord og hensynet til jordvern og beboere for den resterende strekningen? Samferdselsdepartementet vurderer at «ikke-prissatte virkninger» som hensynet til jordvern, skal vektlegges i dette prosjektet. I tillegg har kommunen og landbruksnæringen vært opptatt av støy.
