"I would give it a high chance that I'm out there playing week one," said Hammond about playing against Abilene Christian on Sept. 5. The Midland RockHounds will be playing at Momentum Bank Ballpark for the first time since July 12. The RockHounds host the Arkansas Travelers for a six-game series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Midland looks to get some much-needed home cooking after going 2-7 on their most recent road trips to Northwest Arkansas and Wichita. The RockHounds hope to snap a three-game losing streak, which included an 11-0 loss on Saturday, July 25 in which they were no-hit by the Wind Surge.

WICHITA, Kan. - The Midland RockHounds used a ninth-inning rally to beat Wichita, 2-1, and snap a three-game losing streak on the road on Thursday night. The RockHounds (45-47, 13-11 in second half) trailed 1-0 going into the ninth when Clark Elliott had an RBI double and then Devin Taylor added a two-out single to right field to score the go-ahead run. This was a game that featured solid pitching from both teams.

The Midland father and son duo of John and Drew Ironside finished second at the 46th Texas Father-Son Tournament at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield on Thursday. The Ironsides finished with a three-round total of 64-67-150-281 total, seven shots back of the Argyle team of Marcus and Avery Jones (66-66-142-274). Dave and Tom Moore, of San Antonio, finished third with a 68-70-145-283.

UTPB announces 2026 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees
UT-Permian Basin announced its inductees into its 2026 UTPB Athletics Hall of Fame class on Monday. The 2008 volleyball team, volleyball player Ashley (Rojo) Alba, women's basketball player Kim Chaffin and coach/administrator Virginia Brown will be inducted in an official ceremony taking place Saturday, Oct. 31. The 2008 volleyball team went 23-14 and won both the Heartland Conference regular season and tournament championships under head coach Steve Aicinena.

Recent Legacy grad Shawn Martinez won the Boys 15-18 division with a 69-73-142 total, two shots over Trinity senior Jayden Hofman (72-72-144). RockHounds' Ryan Lasko in stable condition after outfield collision
Midland RockHounds center fielder Ryan Lasko was in stable condition on Wednesday after colliding with a teammate during Tuesday night's game in Frisco. The Athletics, parent organization of the RockHounds, said that Lasko was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano on Tuesday night and underwent a spinal decompression and stabilization surgery resulting from a C6-C7 vertebra fracture. The press release said that Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed the surgery.

Paramount+ and Skydance Sports are doing a docuseries on the Texas Tech football team that will premiere ahead of the upcoming season. The docuseries will follow the Red Raiders as head coach Joey McGuire builds a new team identity during a demanding offseason, according to a press release. The four-episode docuseries from director and showrunner Micah Brown has been in production since January.

Midland Christian grad Waters named OC golf coach
Midland Christian graduate Bryce Waters has been named as the permanent head coach of the men's and women's golf programs at Odessa College. Waters had served as interim head coach since February, following the departure of Brad Stracke last November. Waters led the men's team to a third-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament, the women's team to a runner-up finish at its national tournament and OC's Napajira Nami Luesattha to national medalist title.

The Bulldogs made it to the Division III semifinal round in their first ever appearance at the 7-on-7 state tournament, which helped to fuel Coahoma to a 9-3 record and a playoff win in the 2025 season.

Former Texas Tech baseball coach Larry Hays has been hired as the new head softball coach at Abilene Christian University. ACU announced the hire on Tuesday as Hays leaves NCAA Division II Colorado Christian University after eight successful seasons. In addition to being a college softball coach, Hays was a successful college baseball coach at Lubbock Christian (1971-86) and Texas Tech (1987-2008). Prior to Colorado Christian he spent one season as LCU's head softball coach.
