The Midland College volleyball team closed out the Amarillo College Tournament with a pair of sweeps on Saturday. The Lady Chaparrals swept McCook Community College, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15, and then defeated Trinidad State College, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17, at Firstbank Southwest Center to finish with a 3-1 mark at the tournament. Against McCook, the Lady Chaps (9-3) were led by Giovana Maia with 10 kills and 10 digs, and Mia Bell with 28 assists.

The Midland RockHounds concluded the 2026 season with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Corpus Christi at Momentum Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The RockHounds trailed 5-0 before scoring all of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to split the six-game series against the Hooks. Cameron Leary had a two-run double, CJ Rodriguez had an RBI single, CJ Pittaro had a two-run single, and Casey Yamauchi had the go-ahead RBI single in that big inning for Midland.

ANDREWS - The No. 6-ranked Midland College men's golf team opened the fall schedule with a second-place finish at the Andrews Collegiate-Am on Sunday. The Chaparrals shot 273-289-562 at Andrews County Golf Course to finish 15 strokes behind No. 2 Odessa College (268-279-547). New Mexico Junior College's Leevi Hellberg won the medalist title with a 66-69-135 total to finish a stroke ahead of Odessa College teammates Jeongmin Seo (68-68-136) and Cole Self (66-70-136).

No. 7 Liberty rides strong start to defeat Greenwood
A rough start was too much for Greenwood to overcome against a veteran Lubbock-Cooper Liberty team on Friday night. The No. 7-ranked Patriots jumped out a 21-0 lead and took advantage of Greenwood miscues in a 56-25 victory at First United Liberty Park in Lubbock. Liberty (3-0) had a 14-0 lead before Greenwood even touched the ball. After a 6-yard TD run by Talon Wilcox, the Patriots recovered the ensuing onside kick. Six plays later, the Wilcox added a 1-yard TD run.

Oscar Leroy: Texas Tech begins season with expectations as high as ever
Another season of high expectations for the Texas Tech football team begins Saturday. The No. 12-ranked Red Raiders host Abilene Christian (1-1) at the newly renamed Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock at 6 p.m. The sold-out game will be broadcast on FS1. Tech is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Red Raiders went 12-2, won their first-ever Big 12 title and made their first appearance in the College Football Playoff.

ANDREWS - Things were not looking good for Andrews early in the fourth quarter on Friday night. The Steers had taken a 34-14 advantage and it looked like rival Big Spring would end its four-game losing streak against the Mustangs. However, Tommy Evans and the Mustangs had other ideas in the final minutes. Evans helped spark a furious comeback with three touchdowns as the Mustangs erased the 20-point deficit for a 42-34 victory at the Mustangs Bowl.

ODESSA – The Midland College volleyball team began the Odessa College Invitational on Thursday with a four-set win over Casper College. The Lady Chaparrals improved to 4-1 on the season with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17 victory at the OC Sports Center. MC was led by Lucija Rogic with 19 kills; Iasmin Araujo had 14 kills and 13 digs; Larah Nunes had 15 digs; Giovana Maia had 10 kills, 11 digs and three aces; and Mia Bell had 29 assists in the win.

For the first time since the 2017 season, the rivals face off as non-district opponents at 7 p.m. Friday at the Mustang Bowl in Andrews. AREA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Greenwood junior quarterback Andrick Rodriguez shined in his first ever start at quarterback in a 39-12 victory over Jim Ned. Rodriguez completed 14 of 23 passes for 286 yards, four TDs and an interception, to go with 75 yards rushing on 10 carries in the victory. Greenwood coach Bryan Hill said he was proud of the way Rodriguez and the offense performed and added that the one-time cornerback standout for the Rangers really shined when the team needed him most.

The Chargers came up with four turnovers and shut out Holy Cross in the second half in a 58-12 mercy-rule victory at Coombes field.
