1. Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by progressive airflow obstruction and airway inflammation, variously associating airway epithelium remodeling, lung parenchymal destruction, systemic inflammation, comorbidities and higher susceptibility to pulmonary infections [1]. This disease is mostly related to chronic exposure to aeropollutants, including tobacco smoke and indoor/outdoor air pollution.
