With extraordinary interviews with new sources, William Todd Schultz’s An Emergency in Slow Motion: The Inner Life of Diane Arbus, to be published on August 30th, promises to be an explosive contribution to what’s known about Diane Arbus, whose influence and value in the art world has soared since her death in 1971, at the age of 48.

As the ongoing debate around Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988) demonstrates, people are prepared to be generous in their definitions of what makes a Christmas film. But at least Die Hard takes place at the right time of the year: Meet Me in St. Louis (Vincente Minnelli, 1944) begins in high summer, before graduating to Halloween; only in the final third do we get to Yuletide, and yet no one ever doubts its Christmas credentials.
