However, it was Maryland who would ultimately pull ahead and win 76-59. The Terrapins got out on an early lead, with a 5-0 run. Junior forward Maddy Westbeld turned the tide, putting Notre Dame on the board and igniting a 6-0 Irish run.

The No. 11 Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team is back in action Saturday against the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers. The Irish have had mixed results against ranked opponents this season. Notre Dame won handily against No. 18 Duke 14-6, but lost to No. 1 Syracuse and No 2. Northwestern 15-7 and 18-14, respectively. The ACC is the toughest conference in NCAA Division I lacrosse, but the Irish have made their presence known. However, Virginia is right on Notre Dame’s tail.

While Notre Dame campus was away for spring break, the No. 11 Irish women’s lacrosse team played three consecutive games, one on the road and two at home. Notre Dame started their series of games with an away loss against now-No. 1 Syracuse. Despite the 15-7 loss, Notre Dame still flexed their skill. While the Irish controlled the first three draws of the game, it was the Orange who would find the back of the net.
Dominating win marks Notre Dame's first ranked victory // The Observer
The No. 13 Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team had a dominating win against No. 11 Duke on Saturday. Despite the Irish having the weapons in their roster — and a winning streak — they have not had the best luck against ranked opponents in the past. In the 2021-2022 season, the Irish got into a habit of losing to ranked opponents by one or two points. This season, however, Notre Dame was looking for a change.
Irish persevere through injuries, defeat Wolfpack 66-60
Fans gathered to watch the top-seeded Notre Dame face off against NC State. All eyes were on all-star sophomore guard Olivia Miles who was injured in Notre Dame’s Sunday matchup against Louisville. However, Miles was not warming up with her teammates. The Irish were slow to start and early, they were unable to pull ahead. Out of the 14 Irish points in the first quarter, it was sophomore guard Sonia Citron who scored nine of them.
Bengal Bouts Quarterfinals: Ring B
The Bengal Bouts continued with quarterfinal action on Monday night. Ryan “Lefty” Lally of Dunne Hall def. Freud's new favorite show // The Observer
Just like any other girl growing up in the 2000s, I watched TLC (which at one point stood for “The Learning Channel”) religiously. From “19 Kids and Counting” to “Sister Wives,” I was obsessed with watching whatever strange concoction TLC brewed on that given day. This past year, however, I think TLC has outdone themselves. Dating shows like “Love Island,” “The Bachelor” and “Too Hot to Handle” have taken the internet by storm.

Something special about Super Bowl Sunday
Growing up, if you asked me what my favorite day of the year was, I would always say the Super Bowl. Don’t get me wrong — I loved waking up Christmas morning to dozens of presents. I would always be the first to wake up for the yearly Easter egg hunt. But as much as I absolutely love spending time with my extended family, there was something special about the Super Bowl.
The worst best list in television history
I would like to preface this article by saying that I am in no way a television critic. I have no history in film, television or art for that matter. However, I watch an absurd amount of TV. That is the only qualification I have for writing this article, and I think that is good enough. If you disagree with me, then you can go enjoy the Rolling Stone list that I am standing against in the following few hundred words.
Irish team that ‘returns incredible strength’ looks to take step forward in 2023
After two years of devastating endings to their seasons, the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team is back in action Friday, hoping to turn things around for their seniors’ final seasons. To be ready for play, the Irish changed up some of their coaching staff, welcoming in associate coaches Lauren Brenner (defensive) and Adam Sear (offensive) this year.

The Saint Mary’s Belles’ soccer team fought hard, but ultimately fell 4-0 against the No. 9 ranked Calvin Knights on Tuesday. Within the first two minutes of the game, Calvin had a shot on goal, however it would miss left. A little over two minutes later, the Knights would have another shot on goal and this time, Belles’ sophomore goalkeeper Kara Stacey would save it.
Schatz: The year of the Jaguar
For 18 weeks, the NFL has control over American living rooms. Out of 32 teams in the league, only one gets the coveted Lombardi Trophy each year. People bet millions of dollars on the outcome of a three-and-a-half-hour game. Throughout the span of 56 Super Bowls, 12 teams have yet to take home the crown. And out of those 12 teams, four have yet to make it to the game: the Browns, the Texans, the Lions and of course, the Jaguars.
Belles battle, lose 2-0 to Thunder
Entering the game with a 0-5-3 record, the Saint Mary’s soccer team had a daunting task ahead of them. Trine University had made it to the NCAA tournament last year, and before their matchup with the Belles, had a 4-3-1 record. While the Belles were unable to come out on top, they battled with the Thunder and held them to only 2 goals throughout the match. At the start, Trine came out hot, and within the first three minutes of play, the Thunder had a shot on goal.
Saint Mary's volleyball drops three sets against No. 5 Calvin
Despite dropping three sets on Saturday against No. 5 Calvin, the Saint Mary’s volleyball team was closing to breaking their seven-game losing streak. The match opened up with the Belles and Knights equally fighting for control. Throughout the course of the set, no team had a lead greater than two points. While the Knights won the opening point, the Belles fired back right away. This back and forth continued throughout the entire game.
Spooky Season for Cinephiles
Today is the first day of fall and spooky season is upon us! What better way to get into the mood than to put on a good halloween movie. From Hocus Pocus to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, halloween classics range a variety of genres. And while these classics are mentioned on every list, I thought I would create my own. This time, of the more forgotten Spooky Season films. Practical Magic This movie is the most slept on Halloween movie out there. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witch sisters?
Rockwell, Monson lead Irish into ACC play
Notre Dame volleyball’s head coach Salima Rockwell came onto campus with a rocky start. The Irish opened up the season 0-2 against Texas Tech and Mississippi State before winning in the fifth set against Milwaukee. The Irish then traveled to the Long Beach State Tournament where they also went 0-2 on the weekend. This would be the start of a nine-game road streak. Since the Long Beach State Tournament, however, the Irish have shifted their luck.
Belles unable to obtain first win of season
The Saint Mary’s soccer team played two home matches over the weekend. Although they opened the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Franklin, the Belles were able to salvage the weekend with a 2-2 tie to Lake Forest. The Belles, 0-4-3, are approaching the mid-way point of the season looking for their first win of the year. Despite the score against the Grizzlies, the Belles were able to hold the ball for a good portion of the first half.
Notre Dame volleyball looks to improve record at Bulldog Brawl
The Notre Dame volleyball team has started off on a rocky start with a 3-5 record on the season. The Irish lost two at home games to Texas Tech and Mississippi State before declaring their first win under head coach Salima Rockwell against Milwaukee. Their luck did not continue on the road, however, as the Irish squad has since had a record of 2-3. The Irish have four more games on the road before returning to Purcell Pavilion on Sept. 30 to play No. 7 Georgia Tech.
Schatz: The Irish are not good, thoughts on falling to an unranked Marshall
Emotions were high, and scoring was low, this Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium. The Thundering Herd stormed onto campus ready to knock down the Fighting Irish. What is there to say about the game? Well… not a lot. Marshall proved that Notre Dame was ultimately an underprepared – and under-coached – team. And, moving forward, they need to their act together if they hope to have even somewhat of a successful season.
As Irish search for answers, special teams provides consistency
During Saturday’s game against Marshall, there wasn’t any individual player who was the reason for success, or lack thereof. Throughout the 60 minutes of play, there was rare consistency between any one player. Tight end Michael Mayer stacked up 103 receiving yards, followed by wide receiver Lorenzo Styles with 69. Running back Audric Estime was second to only sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner who had a total of 33 rushing yards.
Notre Dame Tailgating for Dummies
Three years ago, bright-eyed me came into Notre Dame with no expectations for tailgating. I grew up in the suburbs of New York, aka no good high school football and absolutely no real tailgating. Well, unless you count Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. I had no one to guide me through the confusing lots of Joyce and Stadium or to explain the unwritten rules of tailgating.
Notre Dame hopes to continue shut-out streak against No. 22 Wisconsin
An undefeated No. 16 Notre Dame women’s soccer team returns home to play No. 22 Wisconsin Friday. While the Irish have so far come out victors, the Badgers are a highly ranked team, and it will not be easy to maintain their unbeaten streak. Currently, the Irish are in a good position both defensively and offensively to push through this season. Notre Dame has shut out, Marquette, Western Michigan, No. 19 St. Louis and Illinois. The last time the Irish had a four-game shutout streak was in 2010.

The Notre Dame women’s tennis team closed out their season with a 13-11 overall record and 5-8 in conference. The Irish finished their regular season ranked No. 42 overall. While Notre Dame has a pretty successful record, they suffered three loses out of the last four games they played. Even with a rough ending to the season, the Irish has had some success overall with wins against Syracuse (4-3), Boston College (4-3), No. 35 Washington (5-2) and No. 13 Miami (5-2).
Irish women’s lacrosse pounds Pitt and Marquette
After a 16-10 loss against No. 3 Boston College, the No. 18 Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team comes back with a 19-7 win against Pittsburgh on senior day, before another big win against Marquette (19-10). This season has not been smooth sailing for the Irish as they currently sit with a 7-8 record (2-5 ACC) with losses against all top teams. However, the Irish hope to bring this momentum into their final regular season game against Louisville this Saturday.
Belles drop match to Kalamazoo
The Saint Mary’s Belles saw an 8-1 loss against Kalamazoo Tuesday evening. The competition started off tough for the Belles in doubles. The first match saw senior Meredith Heckert and junior Kalyn Borger battle throughout the set, eventually losing 8-6 in second doubles to the Hornets. Junior Kathleen McLeod and freshman Alayna Campbell battled through a host of long rallies but never broke through. They lost 8-0, a score that didn’t reflect the back-and-forth rallies at No. 1 doubles.
Schatz: Finding the perfect candidate
“Why don’t they just pick the most qualified person?” When Biden announced that he would be nominating the first black woman as a supreme court justice, this expression littered the internet. He wasn’t the first, and he will not be the last, to create media backlash for seemingly “ignoring” more “qualified” candidates for the sake of political correctness. More recently, on March 28, the NFL announced that for the 2022 season all 32 teams must hire a minority offensive assistant coach.
Schatz: The Rally Jameel — A beautiful race in a world of madness // The Observer
On Sept. 26, 2017, King Salman of Saudi Arabia issued a law that would give women the right to drive. A little over a year later, over Saudi women were issued a driver’s license. By June 24, 2018, women were on the road. At this point of the article, you might be wondering if you are actually reading the sports section. I assure you, you are. In the same year women were allowed to drive, the Rally Jameel was created.

Notre Dame travels to Chapel Hill to take on No. 2 UNC on Saturday
After a 12-15 loss to No. 8 Duke, the No. 22 Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team looks to come back against No. 2 University of North Carolina on Saturday. The Irish have endured a tough season, and with a 4-6 record and a schedule that doesn’t get any easier. Notre Dame must dig in as they head into the latter part of their season. Typically, when a No. 22 faces a No. 2, all bets go towards the higher-ranked team. However, the Irish’s record does not indicate their talent.

"Keep politics in sports" // The Observer
On Aug. 26, 2016, Colin Kaepernick sat on the bench for the national anthem. Millions soon noticed the small act of rebellion. Few supported him, and his actions received much backlash. At the time of the protest, many commented on the fact that Kaepernick himself was not the best football player and was headed for football disaster anyways. However, this stance is not a proper argument against his protests.
Irish lose to Virginia Tech 12-13 before dominating Jacksonville 20-5
Last Thursday, the No. 15 Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team traveled and lost 12-13 in a tight game to No. 24 Virginia Tech. The Irish then played No. 20 Jacksonville Saturday to Charlotte N.C., dominating 20-5. 2022 Bengal Bouts quarterfinals: Ring B results
The Bengal Bouts Quarterfinals action continued in Ring B. Justin “Rise and Shine” Reisert vs. Nirajan “One Punch” Koirala Koirala came out of the gates on the offensive. While Reisert was able to stay on his feet on defense, Koirala would continue to pound on his opponent. This momentum would continue and Reisert would need a count before Koirala cornered him for the rest of the round.
Irish lose to Syracuse 17-16 in overtime
After a strenuous fight, then-No. 17 Notre Dame ultimately fell 17-16 in overtime to No. 3 Syracuse at home Saturday night. After the first three quarters it appeared to be a blowout from the Orange, but that quickly changed into a close game. Although the Orange outscored the Irish 6-2 in the first quarter, it was Irish junior midfielder Madison Mote who made the first goal unassisted. However, the Orange answered and took a 3-1 lead with six minutes left in the opening quarter.
