Cycling is a vital tool for public health, local air quality, and cutting traffic congestion. The Liberal Democrats have long championed legal active travel, having been the first major party to adopt the landmark recommendations of the 'Get Britain Cycling' report. However, public concern is growing over the dangerous misuse of illegally modified, high-speed e-bikes on pavements and in pedestrianised zones.

Enabling more people to walk, wheel, and cycle for short everyday journeys is one of the most cost-effective investments a government can make. Research shows that getting 5.3 million more people regularly active could save millions of sick days, free up 1.7 million GP appointments, save households around £1,700 a year, and deliver a £115 billion boost to our economy.

Learning to drive is more than just a rite of passage - it is a vital life skill. For many young people, a driving licence is the road to economic freedom, education, and independence. But after years of Conservative mismanagement and continued inaction under Labour, the road to independence has become a dead end. Average waiting times for driving tests have spiralled to over 20 weeks, with some learners waiting half a year just for a slot.
