INTRODUCTION In many low- and middle-income countries, a sharp disconnect exists between wildlife conservation policy and the economic interests of local people (Jordan et al., 2020; Kideghesho & Mtoni, 2008). For many communities, wildlife impose a significant financial burden, both directly, through crop damage and livestock depredation, and indirectly, through land-use restrictions designed to maintain suitable wildlife habitat (Salerno et al., 2020; Thondhlana et al., 2020).
