1 Introduction Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular bacteria maintained in nature through transovarial and transstadial transmission in hematophagous ectoparasites—primarily ticks, but also mites, lice, and fleas depending on the species—which transmit the pathogen incidentally to humans through their bites [1, 2]. In contrast, leptospires are spirochetes that reach humans through direct or indirect contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected reservoir mammals [3].
