Omar is an East Africa Business Correspondent for Reuters, where he covers companies and economic news about the region based in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
Before that, he was a reporter for Bloomberg News in Tanzania, where he reported on the business, economic and financial news in East Africa's second largest economy. Prior to that he was East Africa reporter for Quartz. As part of a team at the Atlantic Media Company's-owned site, he helped launch Quartz Africa in June 2015.
Between 2016-2108, Omar was the Knight International Journalism Fellow where he launched Tanzania's first data journalism initiative.
In 2014/2015, Omar spent a year in the U.S., where he was a Hubert H. Humphrey Fulbright Fellow at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where he researched sustainable financial models for doing digital business journalism.
He has been a Senior Producer for a BBC Swahili Service weekly radio news magazine show, 'Haba na Haba' (Little by Little) and created and hosted a news review show @Mgahawa on East Africa Television.
