What was your first job as a journalist?

My first newsroom job was as a copy editor at a local print newspaper in Guadalajara. I later moved into web editing, and since then I have built my career at the intersection of two traditions: the rigor and discipline of a conventional newsroom, and the technical, audience-focused side of digital journalism. I have always been interested in innovation, but only when it improves how journalism is reported, produced, distributed or understood. I also studied literature, which continues to shape my attention to language and my ambition to produce deeply reported, stylistically accomplished long-form journalism.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer concise, personalized pitches by email. Lead with the actual story: what is new, why it matters now, and what access, reporting opportunities or original information are available. Please explain why the subject would be relevant to Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States, without forcing a superficial “Latino angle.” For travel, food, culture, entertainment and technology stories, useful details include dates, location, interview availability, visual assets, embargoes and any logistical support being offered. I am more interested in a clear editorial angle than in a long description of a brand, destination or product. One thoughtful follow-up is welcome; repeated reminders are not.

Who do you wish followed you?

Curious, thoughtful readers who value deeply reported journalism and the context needed to understand a complex reality. I hope my work helps them discover something they did not know, question their assumptions and form their own informed conclusions.
