April 25, 2021 Christian Mbanza is on a mission to teach his students about the rich history of Black people on the Prairies and across Canada. “Black history is Canadian history,” he said. His efforts make him stand out in the Prairie education system. Mbanza has been teaching for five years. By all accounts, he is a popular teacher.

It took a final bow, disappearing over the seemingly endless Prairie horizon of Duck Lake, Sask. July’s warmth enveloped the place. As I watched, I thought of how Black people have seen the same sun waltz on these same lands for more than 200 years. They have become an undeniable thread in the Canadian fabric.
