And in the few months of sun and splendor we have, we do our damnedest to fill all those spaces with music. This city and its surrounding areas host dozens of free outdoor live music series, each one with something special to offer beyond the stage. Jazz in the Park brings the Downtown bustle.

Pedal Tavern gains freeway access
It took eight years to achieve, but last week Dale Dellner, owner of Milwaukee’s Pedal Tavern, finally got the green light for his 10-person party vehicles to cruise the interstate. "I'm gonna have my bachelorette party all the way from Walker's Point to Pewaukee," says bride-to-be Carlinna Rae Colt. "I'm already making my Limp Bizkit Spotify mix." Highway access means the Pedal Tavern can now expand their routes beyond tavern-filled Milwaukee neighborhoods to other cities (and even other states).

Take a sip of this story, brought to you by SoulBoxer – quality, ready-to-drink cocktails that promise less time making, more time drinking. Put a little soul in your life, Milwaukee. This article originally ran in 2013. One of my favorite social media encounters happened about two weeks ago. It started after realizing my kids had never seen "Happy Days" and I ordered the first season on Netflix. On a side note, the first season is strange; completely unlike how I remember the show.

This week in weird Wisconsin social media: Ja Rule edition
In this week's take on weird Wisconsin social media, I take on the phenomenon that is Ja Rule. After the controversy highlighted in two documentaries about his involvement with Fyre Festival, Ja still can't seem to catch a break. Last Saturday, the Bucks hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves for a '90s-themed night. As part of the festivities, Ja Rule performed during halftime of the 140-128 Bucks win. What follows is quite a cringe-worthy moment for the rapper-turned-entrepreneur.
Wisconsin social media got weird this week
Wisconsin social media was in a flurry over the past two weeks from news that stretched from silly to the surreal. Here is a recap: Salacious snowmen complaint (PHOTO: Instagram/kdubs10s) A recent post in the Bluemound Heights group of the NextDoor app complained about snowmen participating in lewd activity. It looks like the poster also has something against Cudahy. Shame! Blue’s Egg customer turns red My responses every time I comment on Donald Trump’s tweets.

Another week in Wisconsin social media, from snow shoes to slam dunks. Here is a recap: Uggs Are Evil The Riverwest neighborhood Facebook page was all worked up – about Uggs. If there’s anything we should be celebrating right now, it’s love. Whether it’s love between good friends, romantic partners or family members, it’s definitely something to cherish. Valentine’s Day in 2021 seems like as good a time as any to be grateful, hold the folks in our pods close and rejoice that we’ve made it this far. Incidentally, it’s also an excellent time to support locally owned restaurants, many of whom are cooking up something special with the hope of earning your business...
Memorable Milwaukee-themed "Bernie Sanders in mittens" memes
Yesterday's inauguration ceremony of 46th president Joe Biden was a spectacle of renewed patriotism, historical firsts and fashion diplomacy. Michelle Obama nearly scorched the blue carpeting on the Capitol stairs in her stunner of a cinched plum suit and Lady Gaga's matching gold dove broach and microphone were smokin', but it was Senator Bernie Sanders' no-nonsense, winter-appropriate attire that completely burned down the internet.

Milwaukee Admirals opt out of the upcoming 2020-21 season
The American Hockey League will start its 2020-21 season on Feb. 5, but unfortunately the Milwaukee Admirals will remain on the bench as the team announced today that it will opt out of the upcoming season. Admirals owner and CEO Harris Turer noted that the team's decision is due to the financial repercussions of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “We are disappointed that we will be unable to play hockey for the current AHL season,” Turer said, in a release.
Milwaukee OG: The Bloody Mary "chaser"
This story originally ran in 2019. But on a weekend in Wisconsin, this story is almost always relevant. The origin of the Bloody Mary "chaser" is an enigma, even though Milwaukeeans – including the one writing this article – would prefer to be in the know. Sure, that regular at that bar said the chaser was invented in a small Wisconsin tavern somewhere just north – or was it south – of Milwaukee. Grandpa swears it started after a war or after Prohibition or something like that.
Is Milwaukee safe? What you need to know about the city's lead crisis
The accusation was simply damning. Thomas J. Welcenbach, a mapping specialist and member of Get The Lead Out coalition, alleged during the Feb. 14 meeting of the Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee that 40 infant deaths along a stretch of North Avenue from 2012 to 2016 could have been caused by lead exposure – with water being the source. He also accused the city of doctoring maps to give residents the false impression that they were safe from lead exposure.

In addition to visiting the newly reopened Desert Dome, guests can experience a stroll through the country in the Show Dome, where the farm-like setting includes scarecrows, cornstalks and hay bales, as well as a pumpkin patch.

Amid rumors of closing, petition asks Milwaukee County Parks to purchase Ray's MTB Indoor Park Milwaukee location
After it appeared that Ray's MTB Park, 8365 N. 76th St., was near closing, a petition by Wisconsin Freeride Association was floated asking the Wisconsin Bike Fed and Milwaukee County Parks to come together to save it. However Eric Bjorling, a representative of Trek, insisted that they are doing everything they can to keep it open. "We understand the people's passion for Ray's," said Bjorling. I reached out to Ray's, Trek Bicycles, Milwaukee County Parks and the Wisconsin Bike Fed.

Health officials are encouraging people to get vaccinated for the flu this season to avoid coinfection with COVID-19. To find out more about why vaccinations this year are crucial, read Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service's earlier reporting.
Surge in suicides in Milwaukee County forces leaders to step up prevention efforts
Milwaukee County is on pace to finish the year with more suicides than in 2019, prompting health leaders to step up prevention efforts. County Executive David Crowley said the county likely will exceed last year’s numbers, potentially reaching 126. There have been 94 confirmed suicides since Jan. 1 in Milwaukee, and approximately eight cases pending that may be ruled as suicides.
