The Independent Voice of the Supply Chain Industry
Cold-chain operations are built around a critical component: uptime. From refrigerated warehouses and distribution centres to food retail and pharmaceutical logistics, every minute of operational disruption can translate into product spoilage, missed delivery deadlines and increased costs. Forklifts, pallet movers and other electric material-handling equipment are critical to modern cold-chain logistics.

From Friday 19 December, there will be no restrictions on visiting anyone in a ward in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, Midpark Hospital, Galloway Community Hospital or any cottage hospital – and no need to call to arrange visits in advance.
Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots
I almost killed this one. I’m not an expert on robots, and the first draft felt self-indulgent. ”Who cares that Campbell thinks the robot videos are fake?” But something happened recently that changed my mind. A couple of conversations where I brought up obvious problems with viral footage, physics that don’t work, shadows that don’t match, and watched smart people’s eyes glaze over. Not disagreement. Just... discomfort. A vague sense that noticing was somehow impolite.
Solid progress made in Board’s work towards climate goal
MOMENTUM is building in NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s climate work, with new figures showing real gains in cutting emissions, expanding zero-emission travel and improving energy efficiency. The organisation’s Annual Climate Emergency and Sustainability Report which was presented to the NHS Board today set out a year that saw a four per cent fall in total emissions, a sharp rise in electric fleet vehicles, no waste going to landfill, and improvements in building energy use.
Molecular insights into electroreceptor ribbon synapses from differential gene expression in sturgeon lateral line organs
1 INTRODUCTION Fishes and aquatic-stage amphibians possess an evolutionarily ancient sensory system known as the lateral line (Bullock et al., 1983; Mogdans, 2020; Northcutt, 1997). Neuromasts in the skin, distributed in lines over the head and trunk, contain mechanosensory hair cells that respond to nearby water movement (‘touch at a distance’), used for detecting prey or predators, obstacles and orientation (Mogdans, 2020; Montgomery et al., 2014).

Treatment moving faster at DGRI, board hears
Emergency department waiting times and the length of time people are in hospital are coming down at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary – a sign that new approaches to treatment are starting to work. The board of NHS Dumfries and Galloway heard at its meeting on 11 August that DGRI’s emergency department waiting times, length of stay and readmission rates had all fallen.
New roadmaps to staying healthy and active
A NEW plan to encourage people across the region to be more active was signed off by the local NHS Board on Monday 11 August. The NHS Dumfries and Galloway Board approved the multi-agency Physical Activity Strategy for Dumfries and Galloway in its meeting today. The strategy is a roadmap for various agencies to work together to help support the people of Dumfries and Galloway to be more active more often.
Atoh1 is required for the formation of lateral line electroreceptors and hair cells, whereas FoxG1 represses an electrosensory fate
Editor's evaluation Many aquatic vertebrates have a lateral line system comprising both mechanosensory and electrosensory receptor cells. Using a gene knockout approach in the sterlet, this study convincingly demonstrates that the development of both types of receptor cells depends on the transcription factor Atoh1, it further shows that another transcription factor, FoxG1, promotes mechanoreceptor but represses electroreceptor development.
Tough decisions ahead as NHS Board continues to battle massive deficit
A RECORD £20.1 million in savings has been delivered by NHS Dumfries and Galloway for 2024/25— as it works to improve its financial position and reduce a growing deficit. The Board ended 2024/25 with a balanced position after receipt of £26.1 million of brokerage funding from Scottish Government. And this week senior leaders planning for the year ahead were warned that the road to financial balance will continue to involve tough decisions.
Mastering knowledge: the impact of generative AI on student learning outcomes
ABSTRACT Generative AI (GenAI) has had a significant impact across industries since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Much of the focus of existing research in the higher education space has considered the impact GenAI has had on academics and institutions. Conversely, research has been less focused on the impact this technology will have on students. Our research investigates how GenAI impacts student learning outcomes in higher education.
Gold Goes West
Gold is doing something unprecedented: moving West. After a decade of positioning for Eastern demand, we're witnessing a dramatic reversal that threatens to break the market's plumbing. Our long-standing 'Gold in China' thesis rested on two pillars: Households seeking to diversify away from local bank accounts, LGFVs, and WMPs as the real estate bubble deflates, and The official sector moving to reduce its exposure to US Treasuries. So far, this thesis has played out as expected.
Two opposing roles for Bmp signalling in the development of electrosensory lateral line organs
Abstract The lateral line system enables all fishes and aquatic-stage amphibians to detect local water movement via mechanosensory hair cells in neuromasts, and many species to detect weak electric fields via electroreceptors (modified hair cells) in ampullary organs. Both neuromasts and ampullary organs develop from lateral line placodes.
Cost-benefit analysis of ecosystem modeling to support fisheries management
1 INTRODUCTION Both simple and complex models provide major societal benefits. They allow us to make more objective, less biased decisions (McCarthy et al., 2004), which can produce better outcomes than decisions based only on subjective judgment (Czaika & Selin, 2017; Holden & Ellner, 2016). But despite their clear benefits, when it comes to high-stakes decision-making, both simple and complex models carry serious costs.
Familial confounding of internalising symptoms and obesity in adolescents and young adults; a co-twin analysis - International Journal of Obesity
Abstract Obesity and internalising disorders, including depression and anxiety, often co-occur. There is evidence that familial confounding contributes to the co-occurrence of internalising disorders and obesity in adults. However, its impact on this association among young people is unclear. Our study investigated the extent to which familial factors confound the association between internalising disorders and obesity in adolescents and young adults.

Response to: 'Small numbers, big impact: making a utilitarian case for the contribution of inclusion health to population health in England' by Zhang et al
PUBLIC HEALTH Health inequalities EPIDEMIOLOGY Building on a recent meta-analysis of mortality in high-income countries,1 Zhang et al calculated population attributable fractions to estimate that people who have experienced incarceration, homelessness, or a substance use disorder in England accounted for 12% of premature deaths, despite comprising less than 1% of the population.2 Their findings provide persuasive evidence that investment in the health of these socially excluded groups can...

Adverse childhood experiences, morbidity, mortality and resilience in socially excluded populations: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction Social exclusion results from multiple forms of disadvantage—such as poverty, marginalisation and discrimination—that exclude people from fully participating in mainstream society.1 Experiences of homelessness, substance use disorder, sex work and criminal justice system contact are associated with extreme social exclusion.
Winter flu and COVID vaccinations roll out across the region
A STRATEGY aimed at providing the best targeted protection against COVID-19 this winter involves adopting a responsive approach to vaccination. Although COVID-19 has been with us now for over three years, it is still a relatively new virus – this means that as we learn more about it we have to adapt our response. This year, the first to be vaccinated will be those who are most vulnerable: care home residents, those aged 75 and over, and those with weakened immune systems.
Access to Naphthoic Acid Derivatives through an Oxabenzonorbornadiene Rearrangement
Herein, the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid esters through an unexpected Lewis-acid-mediated 1,2-acyl shift of oxabenzonorbornadienes is reported. Using this methodology, novel substitution patterns for 1-hydroxy-2-naphtoic acid esters can be obtained. A mechanistic proposal and rationale for this transformation, the products of which had been previously incorrectly characterized, is given.
Atoh1 is required for the formation of lateral line electroreceptors and hair cells, whereas Foxg1 represses an electrosensory fate.
New Results doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.04.15.537030 Abstract In electroreceptive jawed fishes and amphibians, individual lateral line placodes form lines of neuromasts on the head containing mechanosensory hair cells, flanked by fields of ampullary organs containing electroreceptors - modified hair cells that respond to weak electric fields.
Remember Folks, Banking Crises are *Deflationary*
There’s a meme going around that the end of the dollar is right around the corner. That the emergency liquidity provision by the Fed to the banking system represents a restart of QE, and this time, we will print out way to infinity, and the dollar will be trashed faster than an SF VC can tweet the Fed when their bank is failing. Most prominently, this bet. As a former options trader the irony of a 40:1 bet that lasts 90 days and HAS NO STRIKE OR TRIGGER PRICE is a bit too much here.
