The War in Ukraine and the Ugly Face of Racism
What Ukranian Racism is saying about Western Democracy Lots of people will be shouting, “do you have to bring race into this, at this time of ALL times?” My quiet response to them would be, “I wish that I didn’t have to”. Why? Because it says so much about a nation that in a war, fighting for its life, where many of its citizens are facing the reality of becoming refugees they STILL can find the time to dehumanise fellow human beings, also caught between the crosshairs of this catastrophe.

Scholar activism as a nexus between research, community activism and civil rights via the use of participatory arts
Can academy-led research ever be used as a liberatory intervention in communities especially when they have already decided upon their own interventions? This paper attempts to explore this question with a case study about a piece of grassroots community activism that combined knowledge and expertise from both the academy and the grassroots to save a local heritage centre.

I’ve found myself tweeting my moral outrage a lot recently. From #DrivingWhilstBlack to #WalkingWhilstBlack, #LivingWhilstBlack and #EatingWhilstBlack, there have been endless occasions when African Americans are punished for merely being in public spaces. The latest took place at a Starbucks coffee shop in Philadelphia. Two African American men were arrested for apparently sitting and waiting for a friend to arrive.
Populism, the era of Trump and the rise of the far right
I am amazed to discover the sheer volume of hand-wringing there is going on about our present political era of Trump, Brexit and the rise of the far right in Europe. It would seem that President-elect Trump has triggered mass hysteria about a threatening return to the fascist conditions that led to the second world war. But is this a fair assessment?
On race and the referendum
One of the things that really perplexed me was how the issue of immigration really began to take hold of the campaign. I wrote at length about this from a black perspective before the Referendum vote. Why and how did this happen? Two very different if related questions. The “why”? The leave campaign needed to win and needed to tap into something dark and profound in order to light the flame of populist nationalism. The “how”?
