Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

A summer reporting intern for Straus News when I was 17.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No. As a member of Gen Z, the only writing I've done has been on keyboards, touchscreens, or by hand.

How is social media changing news?

It's easier for journalists to get attention for their stories, but at the same time, it can make news consumption a lot shallower

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Kent Brockman.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You're taking on the responsibility of shaping how people perceive the world

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

No preferences, I just want to be pitched in the first place!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Voice Notes

What's your favorite social network?

I like Twitter for news, but Instagram allows me a closer connection with my friends.

Who do you wish followed you?

Someone with NYT in their handle

Why did you become a journalist?

I had an interest in being an active participant in the news.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked for my high school newspaper as a staff writer, arts editor, and news editor

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Although it's a couple of years old, I'm quite proud of the research and interviews in "The Korean Wave Hits New York."

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Apply, apply, apply!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time! I'm pretty much always online, save for sleeping.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Since I come up with my own, they're all great.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I've come up with all my own pitches, so I have to say all of them have been great. As an editor, I've received some rough articles, though.

What's your favorite drink?

I drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, but I love a good hot chocolate

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Asleep, or in class.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I'm an avid reader of New York Magazine and Vulture, and would love to write or work for them in the future.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That writing about the arts and pop culture is "easy" or "fun"
