With the outroars regarding this year’s Oscars, from the tone deaf tone of Emilia Pérez’s soundtrack to actress Mikey Madison forgoing an intimacy coordinator in the intimate movie Anora, one in particular sticks out to me: the borderline brutal A.I. usage in the film The Brutalist. The Brutalist on its own is an excellent movie. It follows the struggles of Hungarian-Jewish architect, László Tóth (Adrien Brody), after he escapes post-World War II Europe.

D.C. has long been a home for mom and pop bookstores, often nestled in the nooks and crannies of the city. Sooner or later, every District bookworm becomes familiar friends with the likes of Capitol Hill Books, Busboys and Poets, and Second Story Books. On Labor Day, one more store joined the city’s lineup of iconic bookshops: JF Books, D.C.’s first and only Chinese-language bookstore.

Romeo and Juliet is undeniably one of the world’s greatest love stories. But as any middle school English student will tell you, it is also one of the most devastating. In its attempt to replicate the romance of Shakespeare’s classic, Netflix’s Love in the Villa (2022) seems to forget the fundamental tragedy of its source material, presenting itself as a forgettable love letter to the infamous Verona.
