1 Introduction Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent distressing thoughts or images that intrude into consciousness (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed either in response to an obsession or in accordance with rigidly applied rules (compulsions) (American Psychiatric Association [APA] 2022). These symptoms are thematically heterogeneous and subject to individual variability (Abramowitz et al. 2010; McKay et al. 2004).
