Limerick woman Rebecca Jordan, who moved to Bondi Junction in Sydney last July, was back in Ireland for a wedding when she heard about the shootings. When she turned on her phone there were dozens of texts from worried friends. “It was terrifying to wake up to those messages,” she said. Although she was at the wedding in Co Tipperary, her partner Sam Hussain, from Co Cavan, was back in Sydney. “He was out and about and heard all the shots being fired,” Ms Jordan said.

Sydney Letter: Punitive measures proposed by anti-Semitism envoy leave feelings of unease

When the Australian government appointed lawyer and businesswoman Jillian Segal as its anti-Semitism envoy, it looked like a smart response to an increase in attacks on Jewish people and synagogues as Israel’s war on Gaza continues. But the recommendations recently published by Segal have been described as a “gross overreach” by Labour Friends of Palestine – a lobby group of MPs and party members – and have been widely criticised elsewhere, including by some Jewish people.
