Abstract Loneliness and social isolation are important public health concerns due to their associations with a range of health outcomes. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether any effects are biased by confounding and reverse causation. We use a triangulation approach combining observational, sibling control, and Mendelian Randomisation analyses (a genetically informed analysis), to draw robust conclusions about these relationships.

1 Introduction Each year, over one billion prescriptions are dispensed in England within the National Health Service (NHS) [1]. However, variability in individual medication response remains an important challenge [2, 3]. Variation in genetic makeup plays a significant role; approximately 25% of all new primary care prescriptions involve drug–gene interactions. Furthermore, almost all individuals carry a genetic variant that may influence the safety or effectiveness of medication [4].

Evaluation of ‘care bundles’ for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): a multisite study in the UK

Due to the timing of care bundle implementation nationally, it was not possible to undertake a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the impact of care bundles. While site recruitment was facilitated through several routes, it is possible that the participating sites were those with a respiratory team who had an interest in care bundles or research activity related to COPD.
