Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes

How is social media changing news?

It makes everything go faster, which is both a great and an awful thing. Less accuracy, more entertainment.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Not sure -- I call myself a writer.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Send me an e-mail that shows awareness of my work. Don't misspell my name or list the wrong outlet. Don't offer an "exclusive" that isn't.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook (unless there is a lot major headlines which people can rant about)

Who do you wish followed you?

Bill Simmons -- when he takes interest in someone, it's generally because they are interesting and/or doing great work.

Why did you become a journalist?

I enjoy the creative process and also like to stay current, while having the chance to try new things and learn.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wrote a handful of articles for my high school newspaper but was told by the supervising teacher that I was a bad writer. (I had already published lots of articles elsewhere, strangely.)

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't just talk about it, do it. Put in the work. Ask questions. Keep learning. Forget about the money. It's a long-term game.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime (if it's a great pitch)

What's the best pitch you ever got?

An offer to borrow a luxury car for a weekend with vacation and food expenses reimbursed...in exchange for mentioning the car in an article.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I only (or primarily) cover entertainment. I cover a lot of other areas, including food, travel, sports, and health.
