Lee school board says Greg Adkins can finish contract, lays out next steps for hiring a superintendent

Greg Adkins will be allowed to finish out his contract as Lee County schools superintendent but don’t be surprised if the school board hires two school chiefs during the next year. The first position will act a short-term hire who can lead the district until a permanent hire is made from a national search. Likely, a permanent hire won’t be made for at least six to nine months.

A Lee County school board meeting got off to a shaky start Monday evening , when the elected officials faced a rowdy audience that often cheered and booed about a one-page flyer that outlines the civil rights of LGBTQ+ students. The meeting was advertised as a pre-briefing, or non-voting session, to give board members a first look at what might be included in next year’s student handbook.

Greg Adkins stepping down as Lee County schools superintendent

Greg Adkins is stepping down as Lee County schools superintendent. He announced his plans to retire in a message to district staff Friday morning. Adkins, 56, has served as superintendent since 2015, making his tenure the second longest in recent history behind James Browder, who served from 2003 to 2010. "Serving as superintendent in Lee County for the last five and half years has been truly an honor and privilege beyond my highest expectation," Adkins wrote in the message.
