The ongoing investigations into the flood control corruption scandal as well as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte are showing the difficulty of going after suspected dirty money. This difficulty should give impetus for the approval of a recommendation of the Anti-Money Laundering Council. The AMLC is seeking expanded powers that will allow it to freeze criminal assets and suspend suspicious financial transactions without the need to obtain a court order.

MANILA, Philippines —  Sen. Panfilo Lacson has filed a resolution seeking a Senate investigation into rising electricity rates, “bill shock” complaints and system loss charges passed on to consumers. Under Senate Resolution 511, Lacson urged the appropriate Senate committee to conduct an inquiry to strengthen transparency, accountability and consumer protection in the power industry.

MANILA, Philippines — Telco-to-tech giant Globe Telecom Inc. has opposed legislative proposals that will prevent children 18 years and below from accessing social media, backing calls for targeted regulation rather than a blanket ban. Globe yesterday threw its support behind Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo’s preference to tighten digital regulation, considering the role of online platforms in recent violent activities involving minors.
