What Marjane Satrapi Saw Beyond The Veil

It was as a young journalist in a bustling Mumbai newsroom busy covering Kanhaiya Kumar (a student leader from Jawaharlal Nehru University’s then) getting slapped with the contentious Sedition charge for an on-campus political meet in 2016, that this writer first picked up Persepolis. As Indians raged against Kumar’s protest, Satrapi’s graphic novel particularly felt relevant as it outlined the upheaval caused by 1979’s Iranian Revolution through the eyes of young Marji.

Candid camera and a Ray of light

The work of documentation Ghosh, who passed away in 2020, was a struggling theatre actor with an interest in photography, met Ray on a lark, on the sets of his 1968 fantasy classic Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, and shot two rolls of candid photos. At that time, Ray had already made his name, having directed cinematic classics such as The Apu Trilogy, Jalsaghar,   (The Music Room), Charulata and Mahanagar (The Big City). Ray liked his compositions.
