그람 염색법
대장균, 페스트균, 포도상구균... 이들은 모두 세균이라 부른다. 눈에 보이지 않을 정도로 미세한 존재들. 그런데, 이들을 모두 '세균'이라는 이름 아래 다 같은 것으로 묶기에는 세균들도 서로 다른 차이점이 존재하기 마련이다. 그렇다면 그 차이점을 이용해 그들을 분류하는 방법도 있지 않을까? 오늘은 세균을 분류하는 방법 중 하나인 그람 염색법에 대해 설명해보려고 한다. 그람 염색법은 덴마크의 외과의사 그람이 개발한 방법으로 세균 세포벽의 성분 조성에 따라 그람 양성균, 그람 음성균으로 분류한다. 그들을 분류하는 가장 주요한 요인은 바로 세포벽을 구성하는 펩티도글리칸이다. 1)펩티도글리칸과 그람양성/음성균 펩티도글리칸은 N-아세틸글루코사민과 N-아세틸뮤람산 등 여러 종류의 아미노산으로 이루어진다. 소단위가 이루는 사슬이 교차결합으로 연결되어 촘촘하게 망상구조를 띄는 주머니 모양이 된다. 그람 양성균은 세포벽이 두껍고 균일하며 주로 펩티드 연결다리를 이용하여 팹티도글리칸 구조를 형성한다.

피아노, 바이올린, 기타...아마도 '악기'를 떠올리라면 가장 먼저 생각날 것이다. 그런데 그에 비해 플루트는 인지도가 그렇게 높지 않다. 플루트를 리코더나 피리와 구분하지 못하는 사람들도 종종 볼 수 있고 심지어는 아예 처음 들어봤다고 하는 사람도 있다! 필자는 플루트라는 악기에 애정이 있는 사람으로서 이 아름다운 악기에 대한 오해를 풀고 그 아름다움을 함께 나누고자 한다. (사실 로지케이의 카테고리 Art&Instrument에도 관악기가 없어서 더욱 이 글을 쓰고 싶었다.) 이번 글은 그 첫 번째로 사람들이 잘 모르는 플루트의 비밀 5가지를 소개하는 글이다. 1)플루트는 목관악기이다. 현대의 플루트는 대부분 니켈, 금, 은, 플래티넘(백금) 등의 금속 재질로 제작되기에 플루트가 목관악기로 분류된다는 것을 모르는 사람들이 많다.
