1 Introduction Visceral myopathy (VSCM) is defined by weakness of bowel, bladder and uterine smooth muscle. Bowel smooth muscle weakness leads to ineffective propulsive contractions, inadequate mixing of luminal contents with digestive enzymes, delayed intraluminal aboral movement, very slow transit, and dilated bowel. Symptoms include massive abdominal distension, vomiting, constipation, and inability to survive or thrive solely on oral nutrition.
