An initial local assessment in June 2019 showed an incidence of 31 interval breast cancers over a 12-month period.

Background: The Breast cancer surgery service is predominantly provided by specialised breast surgeons in the UK based on the premise that specialisation improves outcomes. However, a small subset of general surgeons continues to provide a breast surgery service. Local recurrence following breast cancer surgery is a significant surrogate marker for quality of surgical care.

Background: Eighty one percent of patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the United Kingdom undergo surgery to remove the tumour as part of their primary cancer treatment. According to the Department of Health Information Governance Toolkit Requirement 505, the minimum required attainment percentages for clinical coding of primary and secondary procedures are 90% and 80% respectively.
