Poem | The Holy Ghost
Georg Friedrich Kersting, “A Man at His Desk,” 1811 (Schlossmuseum/Wikimedia Commons) Believing that it is love that drives the sun, the moon and all the stars, and that it is the need for love that moves imagination, hope and faith to coalesce in words, and knowing for fact that the year is closing, and that another year will follow, (like a lily growing again from the mud of a lake) and sorrowfully aware that my flesh is wrinkling and slowly stiffening, while sensing the daily and nightly...
Poem | This Paltry Ego
(Robert Hoffmann/Unsplash) You are running, delighted, up the rough-made laneway to the lake where you are sailor, eel-fisher, pilot; it’s after-school time, you are free-bird, lark and soaring; turf-banks, and the rickety green door into the wood-shed; on the unsafe, rough-plank boat you have built, you will raise a sheet-sail to explore the reeds and small, boggy inlets, sweet breezes accompanying, silence, your own sensual pleasures, and high anticipation; then on your way, you meet the...
Poem | Wetlands
Should you find yourself growing disenchanted with this self-infatuated world, its will to violence and domination—step away a while, and walk in silence, slowly, round the parkland lake; there are bulrushes at water’s edge, their ancient presences and generations; attend, they will reveal their secrets, how their slender height and loveliness hold roots in mud and water, how they host aphids and the tiniest of larvae; be stilled a while, by their graced companionship, as they lean and list...

Book of the Week: Jonah and Me
Our book of the week is our Winter Recommendation: Jonah and Me by John F. Deane. "I see the poet standing like a prophet between the actual and the transcendent, listening, hearing the music of creation, at times its cacophony, at times its symphony, and translating that listening into the music and urgency of words." — John F. Deane, Poetry Book Society Winter Bulletin 2025 John F.

Shell Cuts Gas Output Guidance on Unplanned Maintenance
Shell Plc sees lower natural gas production and LNG volumes in the first quarter of 2025 than previously expected, citing unplanned maintenance in Australia and adverse weather. In a trading update published on Monday, London-based Shell said it expects integrated gas production of 910,000 to 950,000 barrels of oil equivalent. Though that was an improvement on the fourth quarter of last year, it was lower than the range flagged in the last quarterly report.

China’s Low-Gear Economy Dims Global Outlook For Oil
(Bloomberg) -- China’s struggle to kick start its stuttering economy has spawned forecasts of weaker fuels consumption during the rest of this year, darkening the global demand outlook for oil. The Asian powerhouse’s diesel usage may fall 5.6% year-on-year in the second half of 2024, following a 4.2% drop in the first half amid weaker logistics and infrastructure spending, according to Mysteel OilChem.

Michael Collins and Winston Churchill: Could it all have been so different? A unique view
When Michael Collins went with Arthur Griffith to London to negotiate the treaty and constitution that laid the foundation for a new nation, the Irish Free State, 700 years of British domination in Ireland was about to end, in no small measure thanks to the punishing war of attrition inflicted on the occupiers by Collins.
KIRWAN: A Question Posed With Increasing Frequency
Is America broken? It’s a question that is posed with increasing frequency. I used to dismiss it out of hand. This country has come through so much – escape from British colonialism, a civil war to prevent the Southern slave-owning states from seceding, a Civil Rights campaign allied with national protests against a disastrous war of choice in Vietnam. Yet so much divides us nowadays, you might say. Indeed it does, but that’s the nature of a democracy.
EDITORIAL: A Rough Road Ahead
If some of her recent statements are anything to go by there will be little change in London's approach to Northern Ireland and the current debate over the Protocol should British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss become the next prime minister. Indeed, all indications are that Truss will continue to view the world through the "Little England" lens as has been the case with Boris Johnson.
Growing Crisis For Irish Renters
A huge increase in notices for tenants to quit their rented accommodation is adding to a growing crisis in the Irish property rental sector. Sinn Féin’s housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin was speaking after new figures released to the Dublin Mid-West TD reveal a spike in the numbers of Notices of Termination from the same period last year. It’s believed that the rise is due in part to more landlords leaving the market and selling their properties.
Tale drawn from two perspectives
Few people can be said to have had such an enormous influence on their nations’ history or standing in the 20th century as Michael Collins did for Ireland and Winston Churchill for Great Britain.
Micheál Visits Mhichil
Micheál Visits Mhichil August 09, 2022 by Irish Echo Staff Pic of Day: Taoiseach Micheál Martin traveling by ferry to visit Sceilg Mhichil (Skellig Michael) off the Kerry coast on Monday. The weather is always a factor in visiting the famed monastic settlement but Ireland is this week basking under a dome of high pressure and conditions were perfect for the ferry crossing. But he has settledto a comforting placidity.

Confidential information has huge value and the potential for significant damage for companies of any size. How do you effectively recover a client list from an employee? Saudi Arabia Shouldered OPEC's Burden in December as Exports Cut
Saudi Arabia and fellow Middle East producers -- Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Kuwait and Qatar -- are vital to the health of crude markets because they pump about 75 percent of output by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which itself is spearheading an international effort to trim oil supplies through the end of the year. Brent futures surged almost 2 percent on Wednesday, amid signs U.S. inventories will continue a recent slump.
Saudi Arabia Shouldered OPEC’s Burden in December as Exports Cut
If the comings and goings of oil tankers from the Persian Gulf are any guide, then OPEC’s Middle East powerhouses did their bit to curb a global crude glut last month. Saudi Arabia shouldered the burden.
With $1.4 trillion in federal cuts, medical groups need a new economic playbook
Most of our health system clients are putting less stock in fee-for-service care delivery—whether or not they feel ready to do so. Obama-era reimbursement cuts are still on schedule to reduce payments by $143 billion in 2025 and that’s compounded by legislative proposals that would increase cuts to $1.4 trillion. But making a pivot could mean investing tens of millions to build the infrastructure to support value-based care.

Iraq Plays Ball With OPEC as Tanker Tracking Shows Flows Are Cut
During the months of negotiation that led to November’s OPEC agreement, Iraq had insisted repeatedly that it should be exempted from cuts as it battles the Islamic State insurgency and rehabilitates its oil industry after years of war and sanctions. The country also disputed the data to be used in any discussions, insisting that numbers compiled by OPEC underestimated Iraqi production by about 5 percent. Iraq ultimately relented, agreeing to reduce its output.

That far exceeded a prior record of 221 million, set five and a half years ago.
The Glory of the World
The Glory of the World —now running at the Brooklyn Academy of Music—is about Thomas Merton in the same way The Big Lebowski is about the Gulf War—almost inscrutably. Few plays about pacifist monks need a fight choreographer, a giant rhinoceros, a sprinkler, a ukelele, two air mattresses, and a remote-control helicopter.

A Metaphorical God, Part 1
The following is adapted from the preface to The Operation of Grace: Further Essays on Art, Faith, and Mystery. My God, my God, thou art a direct God, may I not say a literal God, a God that wouldst be understood literally and according to the plain sense of all that thou sayest?
