INTRODUCTION The yam (Dioscorea spp.) is one of the most important root and tuber crops worldwide. It produces edible starchy storage tubers, which are of cultural, economic, and nutritional importance.1 It plays a major role in the food security and the livelihood systems of about 300 million people in West Africa.

INTRODUCTION Yam value chain sustains livelihoods of around 5 million people, including rural farming households, traders, transporters, and processors.1 In Benin, yam as an important crop greatly contributes to poverty reduction, food security, and economic development.
