What was your first job as a journalist?
Working at The State News at Michigan State University.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
When I was a kid I always used my mom's which she used to type college papers on. I loved it.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Danny Concannon from The West Wing.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Just an email with a brief overview of what the story is about.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Pretty simple, Microsoft Word and Gmail.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, love the variety and instantaneousness
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Most recently, a piece detailing the formation of the Founders Brewing executive team.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Just reach out and meet people. Always write.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime, but usually the morning so I can get started right away.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
An opportunity to interview a chef which turned into multiple story ideas.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Often I get called Evan, that's always a turnoff. I'll generally give everything a read and consideration.
What's your favorite drink?
A crisp pilsner. Or bourbon on the rocks.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Hiking

New York Times, The Atlantic and Esquire.
