13DK96: A “ good gray ” LATE WOODLAND site in Northwest Iowa
Abstract This report presents the results of excavations conducted at 13DK96, a Late Woodland occupation near Spirit Lake in northwest Iowa. Fieldwork was carried out during the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016 by students enrolled at Lakeside Lab on West Lake Okoboji under the direction of John Doershuk, State Archaeologist of Iowa. Rich, well-preserved collections of bone, ceramic, and lithic materials are discussed with an emphasis on the faunal remains.
Patrick Collison: Programming paradigms have stagnated for two decades, thoughtful API design drives business success, and migrating core abstractions poses unique challenges | AI + a16z
Key takeaways Programming paradigms have remained largely unchanged over the past two decades, suggesting a potential area for innovation. Thoughtful API and abstraction design can significantly impact business success, highlighting their importance in software development. Migrating core abstractions in software is more complex than launching new products due to the need for compatibility with existing systems.
Genome modelling and design across all domains of life with Evo 2

Abstract All of life encodes information with DNA. Although tools for genome sequencing, synthesis and editing have transformed biological research, we still lack sufficient understanding of the immense complexity encoded by genomes to predict the effects of many classes of genomic changes or to intelligently compose new biological systems.

Stripe founder Patrick Collison's Israel visit stirs strong feelings
Payments giant Stripe founder Patrick Collison revealed on X that he had landed for a visit to Israel, and wrote "Great to be back in Tel Aviv. I missed this run." to accompany a picture of the Tel Aviv seafront promenade. Stripe is one of the highest valued privately-held technology companies in the world, and considered a leading candidate for an IPO. A few days ago, it bought back shares in the private market at a valuation of $70 billion. Collison’s post on X attracted a mixed response.
The Letter From The CEO
B2B marketers have a lot of tools at their disposal, but there's one most don’t even think about putting to work: A simple, direct letter from their CEO. Which is a little weird. Because people want to know what the person leading your company is thinking, seeing, and feeling. Here’s how you can give the people what they want, direct from the C-suite, and including a few of my favorite Letter From The CEO examples you can steal from. The CEO seat might be the loneliest job in business.
A BIG Substack Vulnerability: Stripe Payments
**NOTE** If you are reading this via email, the post is too long and is cut midway through. Click to open it in a browser or use the Substack App to read the full article. Available for iOS and Android As a platform that advertises free speech and a censorship-free environment (as long as you adhere to their minimal Ts & Cs), Substack is hiding a dirty little secret. The company is stealthily outsourcing the potential for censorship to its exclusive payment provider, Stripe.
Stripe Sessions: 50+ Announcements, Including AI-Powered Payments, Major Upgrades to Connect, Interoperability, and More
Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, has announced more than 50 new features at its annual user conference, Stripe Sessions, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Last year, Stripe processed more than $1 trillion in payments for millions of users, from the fastest-growing startups to the largest enterprises. The features announced today focus on helping them accelerate their growth. “Our mission is to grow the GDP of the internet.
Robodogs with guns vs robodogs calming dementia patients?
Some people are policy wonks. I am a total science and technology studies nerd. Want to know about the evolution of ‘housework’? How about 'when sidewalks became a thing’? But my full time focus is on how information can be converted into economic value - ie. supporting startups (in robotics) via the right information at the right time. Similarly, finding road blocks that can be removed. The story of the SAFE is a great example.
We could have universal COVID vaccines very soon - if we urgently reform the process
Patrick Collison is a co-founder of Fast Grants and the CEO of Stripe. Operation Warp Speed and the broader 2020 vaccine effort was a miracle. It took less than 12 months to go from a novel pathogen to vaccine shots in arms. The response wasn’t perfect – while significantly faster than normal, the FDA was conservative – they slowed the trials and (unlike the UK) did not permit the human challenge trials that could have substantially accelerated things further.
What We Learned Doing Fast Grants
The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over and it might yet kill more than ten million people worldwide. From the beginning, the institutional response has been lethargic. While officials (including, regrettably, prominent scientific officeholders) provided public assurances, the U.S. did virtually no surveillance sequencing in January or February, even as outbreaks took hold in China and Italy. The CDC botched the initial diagnostic test.
Opposing racism
Patrick Collison on June 2, 2020 Racism is antithetical to Stripe’s mission. Our founding purpose is the broader, fairer distribution of opportunity—opportunity accessible to and inclusive of everyone, everywhere. While no person’s or company’s statement will change society by itself, that limitation shouldn’t paralyze. Social change requires coordinated, broad participation. We share the deep sadness that so many are currently feeling and the upset at the injustices that lie at the root.
We Need a New Science of Progress
We Need a New Science of Progress Humanity needs to get better at knowing how to get better.
We Need a New Science of Progress
In 1861, the American scientist and educator William Barton Rogers published a manifesto calling for a new kind of research institution. Recognizing the “daily increasing proofs of the happy influence of scientific culture on the industry and the civilization of the nations,” and the growing importance of what he called “Industrial Arts,” he proposed a new organization dedicated to practical knowledge. He named it the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Science Is Getting Less Bang for Its Buck

The writer Stewart Brand once wrote that “science is the only news.” While news headlines are dominated by politics, the economy, and gossip, it’s science and technology that underpin much of the advance of human welfare and the long-term progress of our civilization. This is reflected in an extraordinary growth in public investment in science.
Stripe and The World Bank
Stripe is partnering with The World Bank to produce a digital entrepreneurship index. Every day, we see how entrepreneurs around the world are inadvertently stymied by archaic rules, bureaucracy, and confusing requirements. The Stripe / World Bank Digital Entrepreneurship Index will aggregate the self-reported experience of global entrepreneurs to provide data that policymakers can use to directly improve the entrepreneurship ecosystems in their countries.

Atlas + Cuba
Since the 1960’s, the U.S. has maintained a trade embargo with Cuba. Today, more than half a century later, many of these restrictions embargo are gradually being lifted. At Stripe, we stand for increasing global commerce and enthusiastically support this action. The embargo has many components, among the most significant being the Office of Foreign Asset Control’s restrictions on access to financial services by Cuban nationals.
