Prologue: Songs from a Room
The hair on my arms stood up. I’d been reading a placard about the orquestra pioneer Manuel “Cowboy” Donley—or maybe it was the one about Las Hermanas Gonzalez, the sister singers who collaborated with Tejano legends and recorded heartbroken ranchera ballads they’d written themselves. But the next part I remember for certain: a wistful piano melody started leaking into the room. I was pretty sure I knew where it was coming from.

Prologue: Cigarette Smoke and Magic
When I was twenty-two, I lived in a roach-infested two-bedroom on the fifth floor of an eighty-one-year-old apartment building in Brooklyn. Some nights, when her metalhead boyfriend was stuck working at an Irish bar across the city, my roommate Molly and I would stay up late watching YouTube videos that made us cry.

Courtesy the artist and Tracey Morgan Gallery, Asheville When I suggest meeting the Asheville-based North Carolina rock band known as Wednesday in Athens, Georgia, where they would be performing the first show of a two-month cross-country tour, I am aware that the city has a rich musical history.
'Smiley Face' Is The Definitive Stoner Comedy
Smiley Face came out when I was 17. After reading about it online, my best friend and I tracked down the DVD at our local video store, which was called Movie Gallery, but used to be called Video Galaxy. Three years later it wouldn’t be called anything. After securing the rental, we probably took a detour on the way back to her parents’ house, probably passed a weed-stuffed glass pipe back and forth as we carefully navigated the tree-lined backroads of our New England neighborhood.
OPINION: Scammers are everywhere. Here's how to avoid being duped
Sometimes it seems like potential scammers are everywhere you look. Whether it’s an email trying to convince you to help a Nigerian prince who’s down on his luck, a series of phone calls from an unknown number telling you you’re about to be audited by the IRS, or even a good old-fashioned piece of snail mail telling you you’ve won a big prize, it can seem like scammers have managed to creep in all over the place. Because they’re so prevalent, it can also be easy to feel complacent.
Eli Keszler’s ‘The Scary of Sixty-First’ Score Is A Descent Into Dread
In a scene near the end of The Scary of Sixty-First, an unnamed blond woman sprint-stumbles down a residential Manhattan street. It’s obvious that something horrible has happened: She is bleeding from the nose, and her once-crisp white button-down is streaked with red. The camera moves erratically around her, swooping and swerving like some sort of malevolent spirit. Little white lights decorate the leafless trees lining the block.

McDermott: Norfolk Sheriff’s Office teaching youth to be leaders
Families across Norfolk County and Massachusetts have just completed a familiar ritual: the return to school. While it may look a little different than years past because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we go through it because we know how important it is to educate our youth and give them the skills they’ll need throughout their lives. It is, naturally, a time to focus on learning and preparing our children for the future.
Girls' 'Father, Son, Holy Ghost' Came Out 10 Years Ago Today
The golden age of Girls was over almost as soon as it started. “Conceptually, the band Girls… kind of never really came together,” Christopher Owens told a reporter back in 2012. Owens was Girls’ lead singer and primary songwriter, and one of the San Francisco group’s only two permanent members; bass player and production wiz Chet “JR” White was the other constant.

Norfolk Sheriff Patrick McDermott outlines community policing vision
Earlier this month I had the honor of being sworn in as Norfolk County’s 23rd sheriff. As I took the oath, I reflected on both the challenges and opportunities we face, not just at the sheriff’s office but in our county as a whole, and how I am determined that the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office be part of the solution.
Voices of a White Awakening
Notes from Chris Robert: Every Saturday, American Renaissance publishes a brief essay by one of our readers about how he or she came to discover the reality — and importance — of race. In the essay below, Patrick McDermott examines what these stories have in common, and what they say about the future of white racial consciousness in America. I invite readers of The Unz Review to share their “red pill” stories as well.

Nike Pulls All Redskins Merch, Which Might Actually Cause the Franchise to Change the Name
The call for the Washington Redskins to change their name has increased in size. There have been fans and non-fans alike calling for the team to change their name for years, citing the racially insensitive nature akin to the Cleveland Indians and the Chief Wahoo logo or the University of Illinois mascot. But, despite hedging its bets and trademarking a few alternatives, the Washington ownership hasn’t shown any intention to give in to the public’s demands.

Manfred and Clark meet in Arizona and, according to the Associated Press, “emerged with what MLB considered a framework for each leader to sell to his side.” It includes 60 games and full prorated salaries. The next day, the players propose a 70-game schedule. “I told him 70 games was simply impossible given the calendar and the public health situation, and he went ahead and made that proposal anyway,” Manfred says, according to the Associated Press.

England's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney will make his debut for second-tier Derby against Barnsley on Thursday, the club's manager Phillip Cocu confirmed. Rooney, 34, joined Derby as a player-coach from MLS side DC United but has been ineligible to play for his new side until January. "If a player with the qualities, career and the experience of Rooney (is available) you have to be very happy and glad he is here," said Cocu after Monday's 2-1 home win over Charlton in the Championship.

'The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart' Turns 10
If The Pains of Being Pure At Heart’s self-titled LP was an ’80s movie, it’d probably be Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Amy Heckerling’s 1982 dramedy about mixed-up and horny young people with part-time jobs and full-time angst. The film manages to be gritty and genuine without ever getting too bleak; there’s a decent amount of pop sentimentality in the mix. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, which turns 10 this week, thrives on a similar sort of in-betweenness.
Stream: Theophilus London f. Menahan Street Band, “Rio”
Theophilus London hasn't been shy about the non-hip-hop influences that inspire him. It makes sense, then, that on his brand-new studio single "Rio," which London calls an "introduction to the vibe I'm taking for my next, still-untitled full-length," he's backed up by Brooklyn's frequently sampled Menahan Street Band, a group known for playing around with jazz, funk, classic rock and pretty much every other music aesthetic popularized during the 20th century. "I went to Rio in 2010.

Vivian Girls, the rough-hewn debut by the currently inactive Brooklyn band of the same name, provides 22 of the messiest and most influential minutes of the whole revival.

Your best American Mitski interview
That makes me remember a show of yours, when someone shouted that they loved you, and you kind of sighed, like, "You don't know me." To me, the Be The Cowboy song “A Pearl” is seemingly a little bit about that, but I didn't know if it was just me getting caught up in it. I want you to get caught up in it. But for me, it was actually about when you have some kind of toxic relationship to yourself, or to another person, for so long that it becomes your identity.

Watch Wolf Alice’s Lisa Simpson-Inspired “Moaning Lisa Smile” Video
"Moaning Lisa Smile"—the latest single by North London quartet Wolf Alice—is a dopey guitar jam that exists somewhere between the hollowed-out rock sounds of Warpaint and Hole. The track's official video, which Wolf Alice says was inspired by iconic tween Lisa Simpson, follows an ostracized high-school dancer (played by lead vocalist Ellie Rowsell) who is rejected by snobby peers before finding a clique that lets her be herself.
