Addressing Hot Takes: Jake Oettinger and Jamie Benn are not the problem
We need to address some of the hot takes happening in this Stars Wild series. Join along if you’re so inclined. Jake Oettinger and Jamie Benn are not the sole reason the Stars trail 3-2 in the opening round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Wild and they shouldn’t be burned at the stake.
How Mike Modano Started My Journalism Career
Recently, I was having a conversation with a close friend and I started asking a wide-ranging handful of questions. It can be annoying, being pelted personal, informational questions — especially in rapid fashion. Just ask professional athletes. My friend said, “you know, you sure do ask a lot of questions.” I said, “Sorry, you know I was a reporter.” When I talk about my previous career to people, I’ll oscillate between terms and jargon. I was an editor, a journalist, a writer and a photographer.

Stars hold off scorching Ovechkin, Capitals for 2-1 victory
Sports Media Derek Leung Getty Images Patrick Hayslip / NHL / December 16, 2022 After notching an electrifying hat trick on Tuesday to reach 800 career goals, Alex Ovechkin’s quest to tie Bobby Orr for second all-time in goals scored was stifled by Jake Oettinger and the Dallas Stars. Oettinger put on a spectacular performance in between the pipes and the Stars used two goals early in the third period to stop the Washington Capitals’ five-game winning streak for the 2-1 victory Thursday, Dec. 15.

His 2022 season with the San Francisco Giants was the first and last with the team.
Is Bears GM Ryan Poles A Liar?
Sports Media (AP Photo/Kamil Krzaczynski) Trey Daubert / NFL / December 15, 2022 Is Bears GM Ryan Poles A Liar? I’ve never seen a general manager do a more idiotic thing and get praised for it. The guy running the Chicago Bears, Ryan Poles, is a moron. The decision to essentially trade down in the second round to swap Roquan Smith for Chase Claypool is about as brain-dead as it gets. Worse yet, it turns out Poles is a liar too.

Not everyone is thrilled about Rico Bosco returning and one of those loudest voices happen to be Kirk Minihane.
Croissants Suck; Change My Mind
Sports Media (Johnny Miller for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Laurie Ellen Pellicano.) Trey Daubert / Uncategorized / December 14, 2022 Croissants Suck; Change My Mind There will be two groups of people when it comes to this blog; the ones who agree with me and those who lie to themselves. Croissants suck and you know it. Better yet, I dare someone to change my mind. Croissants are a trash style of bread and it needs to be talked about. Can you be honest with yourself?
Dallas Puts Rangers Meltdown in Past Scoring 5 goals against Kings
The Dallas Stars have played teeter-totter hockey the past handful of games, going 1-3 in their previous four tilts headed into Tuesday’s home game against the Los Angeles Kings. They also haven’t scored as many goals in these four tilts as they did in the first three games of the season.
Who Are the Dallas Stars? Dissecting Dallas After the 3-1 Loss to Boston
“The moment you become embarrassed of who you are, you lose yourself,” Elliot Gould said as Reuben Tishkoff at the end of Ocean’s Thirteen. The Dallas Stars are in the midst of an identity change to start the 2022-23 season. Hiring Peter DeBoer as head coach led to a philosophical transformation from Rick Bowness’s defensive-first mindset to an aggressive offensive approach that features players flying the defensive zone early and taking risks in the offensive zone.
Nils Lundkvist Continues To Shine In Preseason Despite Stars' 3-1 Loss
There’s a certain beauty to preseason hockey and Monday’s home tilt against the Colorado Avalanche was filled with a unique elegance that is rarely seen in something so chaotic and unpredictable. While the 3-1 loss was a similar story to many frustrating Stars games last season – plenty of chances but no execution – it’s hard not to see the glamour in this season’s potential and that’s easy to do when the losses don’t actually count. Everything is in front of Dallas right now.
A Comprehensive Look Back at the Dallas Stars 2021-22 Season
Nothing is ever simple with Dallas Stars hockey. Everything the Stars accomplished and all the pitfalls they fell victim to in the 2021-22 season have to be graded on a spectrum. Their demise at the hands of the Calgary Flames in the opening round of the playoffs can only be viewed as a disappointment because of the expectations, the potential and the quality of the roster.
How Oettinger became the face of the Stars’ franchise in one playoff series
No amount of words or stats can accurately encapsulate the sheer competitive will and talent that Stars goalie Jake Oettinger showed in the series and the Game 7, 3-2 overtime loss Sunday night against the Calgary Flames.
Can the Dallas Stars Youth Extend Series Against the Flames?
“It is always darkest just before the day dawneth,” Thomas Fuller said in 1650. More than 360 years ago, the English author tried to make sense of how to deal with the bad times and know the good times were right around the corner. The Dallas Stars experience is a prime example of this and it can be difficult to see following the Stars’ 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames in Game 5.
Jake Oettinger Shines in First Playoff Start Despite 1-0 Loss to Flames
The national pundits didn’t have high hopes for the Dallas Stars in their first-round playoff matchup against the Calgary Flames. They weren’t sure if the Stars’ budding superstar goalie Jake Oettinger was ready for the playoff stage. Many reporters also pointed toward Calgary’s deeper lineup of scorers, including their trio of 40-goal scorers. They also criticized the Stars’ negative goal differential and were quick to say that Dallas was lucky to make the playoffs.
Dallas’ Defense Crumbles in Loss to Vancouver. Who Is To Blame?
The job of a sportswriter is to report what they see and to leave their ego out of that process. When the team plays poorly, the job is to explain how and why they played poorly. When the team plays well, it’s important to describe how and why they played well. The nuance that surrounds this discussion can be hard to bend around, especially considering if the team is actually “good” or not. The Dallas Stars certainly walk that line. They beat the great teams and turn around and lose to the bad teams.

Stars Drop Preseason Home Opener in 4-3 Shootout Loss to Florida
Photo credit: Dallas Stars In their first home preseason game of the season at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Dallas Stars carried much of the play and rallied from a two-goal deficit to take a lead into the third period. However, it was Florida that tied the game with 42 seconds left and scored the only goal in the shootout to claim the 4-3 victory. The loss moves Dallas to 0-0-2 in the preseason after a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Louis on Monday.

Roland Vela Athletic Complex.
Muenster destroys Perrin-Whitt with 19-0 run-rule win
In one of their final games of the regular season, the Muenster Hornets exploded for their most lopsided win of the season. The Hornets crushed the ball all over the baseball diamond to the tune of 19 runs as a part of a 19-0 run-rule victory in four innings over Perrin-Whitt on Tuesday, April 27. Muenster used a 7-run first inning to immediately blow the doors off the game and head coach Josh Wheeler said it was a pleasant sight to see the offense catch fire.

Gainesville's Saenz and Garcia sign with Arkansas's National Park College
Two collegiate futures were secured Tuesday, April 27. Gainesville’s Abraham Saenz and Cesar Garcia each signed national letters of intent to play soccer for National Park College in Arkansas. She put pen to paper and signed her national letter of intent to play soccer at Southeastern Community College in Iowa.
Whitesboro breezes to 9-3 district win over Valley View
The Whitesboro Bearcats baseball team employs a unique pitching rotation that has led to a wealth of success this season. Instead of starting their best pitcher and bringing in a reliever when he got tired, the Bearcats use a primer pitcher for the first two innings and let their workhorse close out the game. That strategy was on full display Tuesday, April 13, when the Bearcats hosted Valley View in a key district tilt and came out on top 9-3.
Muenster’s Jonathan Wheeler pitches no-hitter in crucial tilt against Lindsay
If the Muenster Hornets baseball team had designs on winning district, it was going to have to go through Lindsay to get there. On the mound for the Hornets was senior pitcher Jonathan Wheeler and they couldn’t have asked for a better performance from him. Wheeler struck out 12 Knights en route to a 7-1 no-hitter performance at Lindsay on Tuesday, April 6. Using all three of his pitches – the fastball, curveball and change-up – Wheeler kept the Lindsay hitters off balance all night long.
Gainesville's Hardin signs with Dallas Christian
Gainesville senior Robyn Hardin has been dribbling a basketball and putting up shots since he was four years old. While he also had a love of football, it became clear to him during high school that he wanted to play college basketball. On Friday, March 26, Hardin cemented his future when he signed his national letter of intent to play basketball at Dallas Christian College. Signing in front of his family and friends was a big moment, Hardin said.
Gainesville Leopards soccer eviscerates Burkburnett in 9-0 district win
From start to finish, the Gainesville Leopards soccer team dominated Burkburnett in their first district matchup Wednesday, March 3, at Leopard Stadium. The Leopards were explosive offensively and suffocated the Bulldogs with their defense, holding them without a shot on goal in a 9-0 destruction on senior night. It was the ninth consecutive victory for Gainesville as it finished up the first half of district play at a perfect 4-0.
Top-ranked Muenster Lady Hornets fall short in regional final loss to Lipan
The goal was a state championship. Any other outcome for the Muenster Lady Hornets was going to be a disappointment after coming up three points short last season in the state title game to Gruver. So as the top-ranked Lady Hornets traipsed through the first four rounds of this year’s playoffs with a margin of victory over 40 points a game, they found themselves in the Class 2A regional final Tuesday, March 2, against the fourth-ranked team Lipan – their toughest test yet.
Callisburg Wildcats advance to regional quarterfinal with win over Rains
It had been over a month since the Callisburg Wildcats played in a tight game, but Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Class 3A area round, Rains put them to the test from start to finish. Callisburg was outscored by two points in the second half, but a critical second-quarter spurt for the Wildcats was the difference as they held a 21-11 edge that led to a 58-45 victory. “They’re the type of team that plays hard and physical,” Callisburg head coach Shad Reed said.
Muenster Lady Hornets crush Tom Bean to advance to regional tournament
The Muenster Lady Hornets continued their parade through the playoffs Tuesday, Feb. 23, when they destroyed Tom Bean 80-28 in the Class 2A regional quarterfinal round. As well as they played, head coach Chris Hightower said there wasn’t much time spent reflecting on the win. “Now we get into the regional rounds and it’s definitely much tougher,” Hightower said. “We’ve already moved on from that. This group moves on so much better because the expectation and goal is much higher.
Callisburg flattens Dallas Gateway to open playoffs with win
After a lengthy playoff hiatus, the Callisburg Wildcats finally got their feet wet again when they took on Dallas Gateway on Monday, Feb. 22. Callisburg dominated the first half and rolled to an 84-53 victory in the Class 3A bi-district round. With the majority of the team lacking playoff experience, head coach Shad Reed said he was pleased with how his team played in the first playoff game. “I felt like our kids came to school focused and had a purpose,” Reed said.
Whitesboro Lady Cats fall to Gunter in Class 3A area round to finish turnaround campaign
Coming up short in a Class 3A area-round playoff tilt against powerhouse Gunter, the Whitesboro Lady Cats had an incredible turnaround from last season. Whitesboro went 8-24 last season and came in second to last in district, but this season was a much different story. The Lady Cats finished second in District 10-3A with an 11-3 record and closed out the season 16-11 after the 57-33 loss to Gunter.
Muenster Lady Hornets crush Wolfe City to begin playoffs
Coming off their first loss of the season to Argyle Liberty Christian, the Muenster Lady Hornets had to quickly shake off the disappointment and turn their attention to the playoffs. In the Class 2A bi-district round against Wolfe City, Muenster flexed its muscles and bounced back with a huge win to begin their playoff trek. Muenster started its tilt a little slow, but once the Lady Hornets found their legs, they breezed their way to an 87-26 victory Thursday, Feb. 11.

Collinsville also took down district leader Muenster 48-45 before defeating Chico to set up the play-in game against the Hornets.
Whitesboro Lady Cats 'get the bread' and flatten Keene 52-21 in Class 3A bi-district playoff game
The Whitesboro Lady Cats didn’t play their first playoff game in three years in a bakery, but they certainly came away with bread. Whitesboro brushed past a slow start and blew the doors off the Class 3A bi-district tilt against Keene for a 52-21 victory Thursday, Feb. 11, in Sanger.
Callisburg moves to 26-0 headed to playoffs with win over Eagles
The Callisburg Wildcats went from not making the playoffs last season to crushing everyone in their path this season. Callisburg dispatched Valley View 83-33 on Tuesday, Feb. 11, to polish off an undefeated regular season and perfect district record of 14-0. The Wildcats trounced Valley View 86-38 in the first matchup and head coach Shad Reed said his team did well to not underestimate the Eagles. Nobody on the team has played in the playoffs before, but head coach Nick Hiebert said his team will be ready. “I think it will be a battle and a battle of kind of the mental aspects of both teams,” Hiebert said. “I think the season is wearing on both teams and we’re trying to find our focus.
Muenster Lady Hornets polish off undefeated district slate with home win over Era

It was also senior night for Muenster and before the game they were honored with applause and adulation.
Gainesville native and NFL wideout David Moore gives back to his community
Coming home is always special to Gainesville native and Seattle Seahawk David Moore, but it’s even more gratifying when he gets to give back to his community. Moore just closed out his fourth NFL season and finished with the third-most receiving yards in an experienced Seattle wide receiver corps that led the team to the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Whitesboro Lady Cats dispatch Boyd on senior night 59-25
Whitesboro head coach Nick Hiebert was thinking about senior night for nearly two months and Friday, Jan. 29, in the Lady Cats’ home tilt against Boyd. He knew how important it was for his team to enjoy their final home game of the regular season and the Lady Cats made the most of the moment as they rolled to a 59-25 win. After not making the playoffs the last couple season, the Lady Cats are bound for the postseason.
Gainesville Lady Leopards soccer goes 2-1 in Big Red Classic
The Gainesville Lady Leopards soccer team had a productive time hosting their tournament the Big Red Classic, going 2-1 in their three games. But the one loss to Godley – a 2-0 defeat – was particularly deflating to Gainesville as the Lady Leopards surrendered two goals to the same player in two brief lapses of defense. Head coach Danny Franco said the two wins were nice, but the loss stings more. “We had our good moments, but I think our two letdowns killed the tournament for us,” Franco said.
Whitesboro breezes past Valley View for 45-12 win
In their second matchup against Valley View on Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Whitesboro Bearcats saw a different defensive look from the Eagles. Instead of Valley View employing a man-to-man look, the Eagles went to their zone, which slowed the game down significantly from the first time the two teams faced off in late December. This go-around, Whitesboro was content to let its defense do the heavy lifting as the Bearcats smothered Valley View for the 45-12 victory.
In another tight tilt, Whitesboro Lady Cats hold off Valley View for 52-37 victory
Both times Whitesboro and Valley View have squared off this season, the game has been a nail-biter headed to the final quarter. The Lady Cats fended off the Lady Eagles on Tuesday, Dec. 29, in the final seconds for a 41-40 win. On Tuesday, Jan. 26, Whitesboro held a three-point lead headed to the fourth quarter and outscored Valley View 21-9 to surface with a 52-37 victory. Going 9-of-12 from the free-throw line, the Lady Cats used their aggressive attitude toward the basket to separate themselves.
Lady Knights stave off Era's late charge for 49-38 win
Building a hefty lead in the first half, the Lindsay Lady Knights were in good standing to withstand Era’s comeback bid in the second half. The Lady Hornets cut Lindsay’s 18-point lead down to as many as seven points late in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Knights were able to push past Era’s defense and come up with enough plays to secure the 49-38 victory.
Whitesboro moves to 9-1 in district with second win over Callisburg
Whitesboro head coach Nick Hiebert was not pleased with how his team played in its first matchup against Callisburg, but in the second meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Lady Cats had a better performance. Whitesboro flexed its defensive muscles after a slow start and shut out Callisburg in the second quarter to take a 13-point halftime lead that they extended even more to the tune of a 42-18 victory. The Lady Cats took down Callisburg 34-16 on Dec.
Gainesville soccer goes 2-1 in MSU Showcase, flattens Celina 4-0

Facing teams much higher in classification, the Leopards went 2-1 and showed they can hang with the big boys. Head coach Danny Franco was happy with the way his team played against the tough competition. “For us being a Class 4A team going into a tournament with 5A and 6A teams, we for sure surprised some teams,” Franco said.
