Canberraβs inflation kryptonite
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. April 2026. Photo: Alex Ellinghausen. In his 1981 inaugural address, Ronald Reagan famously said "government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem". Forty-five years later, those Australians alive to global affairs will relate to his sentiment. Staring down the barrel of a historic fuel crisis caused by war-related supply shortages, the brains trust in Canberra can't resist the inclination to intervene.
Iran on the brink
"Checkmate" originates from the Persian phrase "ShΔh MΔt" (Ψ΄Ψ§Ω Ω
Ψ§Ψͺ) translating to "the king is helpless". In modern parlance, the term has become synonymous with an irrefutable and strategic victory. Fourteen centuries later, it may be an apt metaphor for where the West stands following almost fifty years of conflict with Persia's modern-day descendants. The Persian Empire, where chess first flourished, has since been self-styled as the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“Wannabe” and the Summer the Spice Girls Took Over the World
How a cheeky, zig-a-zig-ah earworm from 1996 turned five British girls into a global girl-power juggernaut and rewrote the rules of pop forever. It started with a giggle and a “Yo!” — then a stomping piano, claps like a schoolyard chant, and five girls charging full-tilt down the halls of London’s St. Pancras Hotel. “Wannabe” wasn’t just a debut single. It was a cultural detonation.

Nigeria 2021 budget: A budget of economic recovery or economic sabotage? | By Momoh Emmanuel Omeiza
The budget of any country is one of the many tools used by citizens to judge the level of government’s adherence to its needs. In another instance, it is the medium through which the government seeks to conduct a forecast of both it’s income and expenditure over a specific time frame. Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari via a joint session of the national assembly presented the budget estimate for the fiscal year 2021.
Amazing Interactive Street Art Turns Pedestrian Footsteps Into The Lea
If you’ve worked for a media company (or, really, any brand with a public presence) at some point in the last decade, you’ve likely heard someone in your office urging your business to do something that goes viral. This is usually a fool’s errand, as guerilla campaigns from big brands can often be transparent if not downright dreadful (see an out-of-touch Roger Waters defacing a mural to deceased Elliott Smith in an effort to promote his 2010 tour).

SA's virus numbers down for a second day
For the second day running, only two new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in South Australia as the infection curve steadily flattens. Despite the encouraging signs, visitors to the airport and Barossa Valley who were experiencing symptoms are being urged to get tested and authorities have called on everyone to continue to abide by social distancing guidelines. The state's total sits at 411, with 20 people in hospital, 10 of whom are in intensive care, including seven listed as critical.
Lack of funding hindering SA virus vaccine
A lack of resources and funding is hindering progress on a potential breakthrough South Australian-based COVID-19 vaccine, researchers say. SA company Vaxine is working with Flinders University and Australian researchers to test a vaccine that is designed to prevent the virus infecting human cells. Director Nikolai Petrovsky said his team had made considerable progress building on its experience developing vaccines for other diseases.
SA opposition backs tough border measures
The South Australian opposition has called for SA to follow other states and impose a "hard" border closure in the face of a coronavirus pandemic. The proposed restrictions would block entry to everyone except for SA residents, health and emergency service workers, freight and on compassionate grounds. Those who enter would still be required to comply with a 14-day self-isolation.
