Tailing the pileated woodpecker
LAGRANGE — Everyone, and I mean everyone, who photographs birds, has a list of birds they hope to one day photograph. I'm no different, and over four years of seriously chasing birds, I've managed to find and photograph about half my list. This spring, for example, I got to grab a few frames of a trio of Indigo Buntings. I'd hoped I found a Scarlet Tanager, too.
The complicated legacy of Michael Cusack
IN 1884, Michael Cusack became the founding father of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Ireland’s most successful cultural and sporting organisation, and among the most powerful amateur sporting bodies anywhere. Cusack’s unstoppable drive and passion were behind the revival of hurling and other indigenous Irish sports at the end of the nineteenth century.
As the seasons change, so do the water birds
Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Save A common gallinule prances across some wetland vegetation in a marshy area in the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area on a rainy April 18 morning. Even with its bony, green toes and no webbing, this bird can move through the water like a duck or run across vegetation, like lily pads when they cover our low water and marshy areas in northeast Indiana.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy: Viscerally Scary but Short on Story
Felipe Petterson|Published 32 minutes ago NATALIE GRACE as Katie in New Line Cinema’s, Atomic Monster’s, and Blumhouse’s “LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY.” A Warner Bros. Pictures Release. Image: Patrick Redmond. I have to admit, there’s a lot to say about filmmaker Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. For one, it’s easily one of the most terrifying movies I’ve seen in a while, and I watched it in the middle of the day, fresh off a great workout. That didn’t matter. The film still got under my skin.

Gorillas in the land of a thousand hills
“IF THE alpha male gorilla stands up and starts beating his chest,” the park ranger told our group, “nobody should respond by doing the same back to him.” It was not quite the sort of travel advice you usually receive on holiday. But then Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is not quite the sort of place where one has an ordinary day out. My journey to see mountain gorillas in the wild began before sunrise in the northern Rwandan city of Ruhengeri.
WHO Guideline on GLP-1 Therapies for Treatment of Obesity in Adults
To the Editor Dr Celletti and colleagues summarized the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline on glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) therapies for adult obesity, emphasizing the urgent need for equitable prioritization frameworks given supply constraints.1 The authors identify diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular risk as the primary comorbidities for stratifying patient need.1 However, from a primary care perspective, an additional domain warrants explicit recognition in this framework:...

Anthony Hopkins shines in ‘Freud’s Last Session’
“Freud's Last Session,” starring Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud, adds to a string of sterling late-chapter performances by the 86-year-old actor. He was the soul of “Armageddon Time,” the reason to see “The Father” and the papal foil to Jonathan Pryce’s Pope Francis in “The Two Popes.” With the exception of James Gray's more cinematically composed “Armageddon Time,” the movies have offered simple, stagy showcases for Hopkins, a lion in winter.

A sprawling, mighty galaxy was created in season one of “Foundation.” Now it’s time to rip it down. Season two of the ambitious Apple TV+ sci-fi series flashes forward some 140 years and it’s quickly clear that the clones who form the story's authoritarian order are losing their grip. David S. Goyer, the series’ co-creator, executive producer and showrunner, says “Stasis is boring in terms of drama.” The saga is set some 12,000 years in the future.

SHIPSHEWANA — Retired Illinois art teacher Amy Psinas dips her paintbrush into a small plastic cup filled with teal-colored paint to start painting the background for a mural going on up a 40-foot wide brick wall that’s the west wall of a building just inside the flea market at Shipshewana Trading Place.

SOUTH MILFORD — After standing for nearly a century at the corner of State Road 3 and C.R. 750S, the South Milford war memorial has found a new home, the recently created Soldiers Memorial Park located about a block south. Stone by stone, the old handcrafted monument was taken down and stored nearby. The monument was erected in 1923 to honor those men from this community who served their country at times of war.
Habitat says thank you to its customers and supporters
LAGRANGE — It comes as no surprise that you can find a pretty good deal on a new interior door at the LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity store. Might even be able to find a good used kitchen table as well, or a couch, or, maybe even a good used bread machine. But it might surprise you to know you can even, on occasion, get a pretty good deal on a set of used golf clubs. “Make me an offer,” said John Sisson, executive director of the local organization.
Tourist season and construction season both in full swing in Shipshewana

Last week, the Shipshewana Trading Place Flea Market, reopened for another season and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to Shipshewana again this summer. This year, however, visitors will need to pack just a bit of patience with them when they load up the car to drive to Shipshewana. The town, it seems, is at the epicenter of a lot of state road construction work.

LaGrange County Historical Society Museum a wonderful collection of local history
LAGRANGE — It’s doubtful that anyone has ever accused Bryan McCoy, president of the LaGrange County Historical Society of being overly ostentatious. Instead, most would say that McCoy is quiet, low-key but mission-focused. But no one can doubt his commitment to history, and to his dedication to preserving the history of LaGrange County.
