For many of us in the Pacific Northwest, July has always marked the true beginning of summer. School is out, family vacations are underway, berry patches are producing, lawns are growing a little slower, and thoughts begin turning to backyard barbecues and the Fourth of July.

Today marks the final day of June, and the month is ending on a much cooler note than many of us expected just a week ago. After a brief taste of summer that brought six 90-degree days to the area, Mother Nature reminded us that the Pacific Northwest often likes to keep us guessing. The past several days have featured plenty of clouds, refreshing rain, and afternoon temperatures that have struggled to escape the 60s.

If you were hoping the recent stretch of sunshine and 90-degree temperatures meant summer had settled in for good, Mother Nature has other ideas. The Pacific Northwest has returned to a somewhat familiar late June weather pattern as a cool upper-level low pressure system settles over the region. Instead of sunshine and warm afternoons, we’re looking at several days of clouds, showers and temperatures running well below average for this time of year.
