Last week, as Americans across the country recognized National Crime Victims' Week, Tennesseans had reason for hope. The Tennessee House of Representatives last month passed legislation I introduced to further protect victims of crimes. Marsy's Law ensures something that seems like a no-brainer: constitutionally protected rights for crime victims. Victims of crime go through enough trauma, and that trauma should not be extended past the scene of the crime and into the courtroom.

Marsy's Law would protect Tennessee crime victims

Rep. Patsy Hazlewood and Sen. John Stevens are members of the Tennessee General Assembly. Tennesseans overwhelmingly agree that crime victims deserve rights equal to those given to the accused and convicted. In fact, in 1998, 89% of Tennesseans voted to enshrine a Crime Victims' Bill of Rights in the state's Constitution. But unfortunately, 23 years later, too many crime victims find these rights are not always enforced and put into practice.
